Well mathematically speaking you can do that, in fact it is the fundamental idea of the transitive property (if a=b and b=c then c=a). The issue is the fact that since a and b are the same and you are dividing by a-b, you are effectively dividing by zero, which given our current understanding of mathematics is technically impossible.
