Proof that 1+1=1

Post by Scream » April 1st, 2010, 4:10 pm

The proof that 1+1=1 :

a = 1
b = 1

a = b
a2 = b2
a2 - b2 = 0
(a-b)(a+b) = 0
(a-b)(a+b)/(a-b) = 0/(a-b)
1(a+b) = 0
(a+b) = 0
1 + 1 = 0
2 = 0
1 = 0
1 + 1 = 1

(a-b) is 0. You can't divide by zero.

Also:
a2 - b2 = 0
(a-b)(a+b) = 0
is wrong, 2(a-b) = (a-b)(a-b), unless you meant a^2 and b^2 in which case it's correct. You still can't divide by zero tho.

on topic:

(a-b)(a+b)/(a-b) = 0/(a-b)
1(a+b) = 0

Image

(a-b) = 0
(a-b)/(a-b) = 0/0

There it goes wrong indeed
From (a-b)(a+b)/(a-b) = 0/(a-b) it pretty much makes no sense anymore.

The fact that they assign two different variable to the same number is just stupid. If you could prove it WITHOUT two different variables, then it'd be cool.

In your proof, your treating them as different.
