Desperate need of help!

Post by YouBeenBaked » February 12th, 2009, 12:51 am

Hey, I'm new to this forum, I found it by watching all of CoDJumper's showcases xP

Anyways, I've been stressing out on this idea for a few weeks now, and I have finally come to my decision: I am going to build a gaming PC (for CoD4 and possibly any other future releases).

I'd always wanted to try jumping on the PC, as console jumping has very strict limitations due to FPS  .
So I was thinking; "What would my budget be if I wanted a solid 333 FPS for jumping? Also, which graphics card would you recommend for me [(looking at nVidias)(I also don't want to spend $300+ CND on a graphics card)]?" To be totally honest, I really don't care about all the graphics and what not. I am willing to play at the lowest settings possible; even resolution.

Anything to help me reach my destination would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time and attention; and to those who actually cared enough to read this  .

if you really don't care about graphics you could probably go with something like the nVidia Geforce 9800gt for a graphics card, however I would recommend a gtx260 if you are willing to go near your max price. As for processor, get an Intel Quad Core at 2.4ghz. Power supply, I'd say at least 600w. Motherboard, something that supports socket LGA775 and has a PCI-E x16 2.0 slot. I'd say 2gb of RAM. I'd also suggest getting at least 2 120mm fans to put in the case you'll need to get as well. Don't bother spending any more than $125 CND on a case. You'll also need a 16x CD/DVD drive. I'm not sure if newegg.com delivers to canada, but check them out. They have, by far, the best deals for hardware. Let us know about any other peripherals you might need. (mouse, keyboard, monitor).

For a very rough estimate, I'd say maybe 1100 CND with the 260gtx.

I spend around 600-700 euro to get a good PC able to get 333 FPS.

Gives you a rough price.

Ok, after a lot of looking I found a decent canadian website and found you the parts you'll need. The video card prices on there were crap so you'll probably want to look for one from somewhere else. Also realize, computer building is an annoying art. There is a chance that these parts will be DOA in which case it could create a very large hassle. Also, even if you already have a computer and don't have to buy operating system, hard drive, etc you'll have a large software battle on your hands which will take quite a bit of research. Typically, you'll have to talk with Microsoft to get your license key for Windows reactivated as well as driver issues or the chance that your operating system might not even work with such a drastic environmental change. On the bright side, finding compatible parts is a fairly hard part, and luckily we have some people here who know what they're doing. If you have any questions on the items I picked, please ask. Also, I don't know why you picked nVidia as your way to go, but I might suggest considering ATI as well in this circumstance as their cards a little cheaper (although I continue to believe nVidia is better).

Processor: http://pccanada.com/viewitem.asp?id=5743 ($249.99)

Motherboard: http://pccanada.com/viewitem.asp?id=8221 ($74.99)

Power Supply: http://pccanada.com/viewitem.asp?id=6155 ($89.99)

Case: http://pccanada.com/viewitem.asp?id=7864 ($69.99)

RAM: http://pccanada.com/viewitem.asp?id=4785 ($59.99)

Cooling: http://pccanada.com/viewitem.asp?id=4761 (x2 = 29.98)

Video Card: not sure yet (~$275)

Total: $849.93 CND (plus tax and lots of shipping)

If you don't already have a computer of some type you're also going to need:

DVD Drive: http://www.pccanada.com/viewitem.asp?id=835 ($24.99)

Hard Drive: http://pccanada.com/viewitem.asp?id=3961 ($49.99)

Operating System: http://pccanada.com/viewitem.asp?id=104 ($114.99)

Monitor: http://pccanada.com/viewitem.asp?id=7333 ($144.99)

Total without computer: $1184.89 CND (as well as a mouse and keyboard and again, plus tax and a lot of shipping)

Good luck

Thank you guys so much!
I feel quite honered to be helped by an individual from the actual CoDJumper Team
Soviet, you are a life-saver! You just saved me the hassle of planning and whatnot! :D
Although, I have a question, which may seem like a very, very, very stupid one!
I'm 15 years of age, and this will be, by far become the first build of my life.

All the parts, including the mobo, should come with all the wires and equipment needed to build the PC (excluding screwdrivers and such :) ), right?!
Also, I am not very experienced with the purchasing of items online. How does it work? How would you send money to the seller?

I'm sorry for the dumb questions :? , but I really need help in this situation.
Thanks again Soviet!

Typically it's credit card, so parent/guardian most likely. Although some do accepts checks or whatever. You should get a step by step walkthrough when you go to checkout.

All the cables come with the power supply. Do lots of research before you do anything though. Building a computer isn't as simple as you might think.

Ah I see!
Thank you so much KillerSam!

What do you think the elapsed time would be, in total, to completely build this PC?

You are a lifesaver Sam!
Thank you soooo so so much!

But, I have one other question:
If I extract the DVD drive and the HD from my old PC, would it still be compatible with the new PC I'm about to build?

Thanks again,

I still have a pretty old DVD drive. It doesn't work with every game so you gotta keep that in mind. After all, you might need to buy a new one.

Mine didn't work with Wrath of the Lich King. But luckily I could download the game from their site. All other games have worked so far though which is a bit weird.

Yeh it's cheap. But it's something to keep in mind. So far I have no point to replace it yet.

Would a 9800 gt allow me to run CoD4 with at least 333 fps?

it's probably your best bet if you can't afford a gtx260 or ati 3970
