Graphics Card

Post by x0ozero0x » January 26th, 2009, 5:38 pm

Okaii i' m saving up for a new graphics card at the moment and was wondering what would be the best to run CoD4 and other future releases, it can't be majorly expensive just good enough to support CoD4 at a good fps like you guys, if u could send any good suggestions or what you use then it would help me a lot to decide. Also if you have any good (UK) links to any good cards please post them.
Thanks :)

Both of those are ones I am considering getting. Isn't the 260 very expensive compared to the 4870?

~20 pounds more. However, most games are optimized for nvidia and most of the 260s outperform the 4870s.

OK, well seeing as this topic is relevant to me too, I'm going to latch onto it also :P

Here's my current PC specs:

Processor: Intel Core2 CPU 6600 @ 2.4GHz
Memory: 2046MB RAM
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT
Operating System: Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit
Motherboard: ASUS P5W DH Deluxe
Computer Case: Antec P180 Advanced Super Steel Mid Tower ATX Case

I'm looking to significantly improve my computer's performance while playing games - map load times, FPS, etc. Which would be the best options? Clearly my graphics card is significantly letting my computer down at the moment, so that'll need replacing (most likely with a 260 judging by the comments in this topic - but which version of the 260? Links please people :)).

that's a bit expensive. I'm not sure about the price in UK, but you can get a midline 260 in the US for about 125 pounds

I'd also tend to go with XFX or eVGA

I wouldn't get the second one, because 8000 cards are getting old now, and not worth £160 imo.

Not sure about the first one as I've never had/heard anything about it. Out of 28k feedbacks he has 98% positive though, so that's good.

I wouldn't go with anything less than the 200 series.

Okaii then if i can find a cheap 200+ series then i will probably choose that, but remember i got a 14 year old budget, so it would probably be stretching it a little, also please look on the third link i posted it has a lot of other graphics cards and maybe you will have better luck than me in telling which are good value.

Get the GTX 295 :) It's "only" £500, but it performs better than HD4870 X2 on low resolutions (though it's a lot more expensive)

ATI make better cards for better prices, but to get maximum performance you sometimes need to tweak around with your settings and know your stuff, so the easiest choice would probably be Nvidia, but it's a bit pricy and not as good.

ATI also lacks PhysX, has a bad history in comparison to nvidia, and most games are also optimized for nvidia, not ati.
