Nvidia 8800GT (512 mb) what do you think of it?

Post by JDogg » January 19th, 2008, 9:42 am

At the place my dad works (tabcorp) the workers get free computers (intel core 2 duo 3.00 ghz etc). So instead of building a gaming PC my dad ordered 2 pc's from work. So now basically we have alot to spend on a graphics card. Since we need to get 2 I was thinking of getting 2 8800 GT's (512 mb). I wanted to know what you guys think of this card, because this is (will be) my first pc ever, so I have no clue about good video cards etc (I have heard good things about this card). I also want to know if you think it's future proof, will the card handle next generation games (next year etc). ALSO 512MB 8800GT Generic /Gigabyte /ASUS /Leadtek 335/385/385/385
Which one should I buy? Generic, Gigabyte, Asus or Leadtek, does it matter?

The 8800gt is a very good card. Here it is notacible faster the my old overclocked 320 mb GTS (which is a more expensive card). This is the card to buy atm.
Is it future proof? Id have to say NO, but it doesnt matter if u buy 3 8800ultra's, its still not future proof. Being future proof with pc hardware is an illusion, cant be done.

You can get two ATI cards that give you 1600fps on cod4, for £350.. way better than 8800..

I dont believe that, do you have it yourselve? or did someone tell you he has? or did you see a screenshot? What ati cards does he have?
1000 fps has been the max in all cod games, even if your pc can do better, the game wont allow you to have more. Stories of ppl having 1200 or 1600 fps are all not true, its bullshit.
Also 350 pound is over 200 pound more expensive then an 8800gt

As good as that sounds, I really only want to play CoD4, WoW, CSS Hl2 DoD, maybe Crysis. I've seen CoD4 being played at around 80 fps (on an old ati card) and the game is more than playable and still looks great

Bah, thats way too much, I'm no pro gamer, and this is my first pc. Remember we have to buy 2 (1,398 for the 4 ati's)

Ehm, it normally doesnt matter, aslong as they all have the 'original' cooler on it then they should be all the same. However PEAK for example is known to make cards with less durable memory. Asus and leadtek are good brands, I dont really know the other 2 brands, also check which brand gives u the longest warranty.

BFG Tech and eVGA make the best video cards. I would also highly recommend the 8800gt.

Just a quick question. Intel pentuim 4 dual 3.00 ghz. Is that good enough, or do I need to be looking at something more like intel core 2 duo?

Thought u were gonna get core 2 duo..
Anyway, core 2 duo is recommended in order to get the maximum performance out of the card, but it will still be very fast with pentium 4.

Yeah I though I was getting a core 2 duo. Good to know it will still work. All I want to play is CoD4 tbh :P

You do have to check what motherboard you have. The 8800gt is a PCI-e 2.0 card, so a 2.0 motherboard is recommended.
The 8800gt is backward compatible to PCI-e 1.1 I think, so you should check what PCI-e slot the motherboard has.

I dont know how to check it on your computer. However your dad probably has a lot of files (just paper, nothing on pc ;)) that have got the specs of your pc on it (warranty files and pc purchase stuff). An other way to check it is to open the case, I think the name of the motherboard should be placed somewhere on it. But I would just ask your dad for the warranty files etc.
