Help with my keyboard plz

Post by crabby » August 8th, 2006, 5:57 am

Hi whenever I play games using the microsoft 3.0 keyboard, whilst holding the w,a,s, or d keys to move, after about 2-3 secs of holding the key, I stop moving in the game (i guess the keyboard times out and stops sending the signal or something) and I have to let go of the key and re-press it. Is there some setting somewhere to fix this or is this just the way the ms 3.0 works?

thanks,
crab

You need a usb keyboard to use multiple keys at the same time. PS/2 does not support it.

I have a ps/2 keyboard and I can press more than one key at the same time....how else could I strafe

but having it stop working after a few secs sounds more like a setting that you would need to change

Quick summary of above (sorry cba to edit)

It is a problem with ALL keyboards (my mistake) but some keyboards suffer worse.

your keyboard has a set of "matrices" behind the scenes which detect keypresses. If your keyboard is lame, it will probably only have 3 matrices, and thus only allowing specific keys to work at the same time. Some keyboard do not suffer from this at all, theres no specifics to what does allow it and what doesn't, my Zboard only allows 5 keypresses from a very quick test (it may not be correct) and some will only allow 3 (makes it hard to strafe ;))

So basically its a technical issue, you either have a problem or you dont, welcome to the world of computers :P

Some keyboards can handle ANY set of keypresses, like I was saying about my Zboard, it handles ANY 5 keypresses, but no more. Some old keyboards have been known to allow any keypresses at any time.

If you would like to really see which keys can be pushed, open your keyboard up and you will see the matrices, they will show you which keys you cannot press together...

Just for a laugh, I present you with, the technical side of this problem...
