Essentially US vs Japan version 2. The main differences:
1. The Vietnamese knew the areas they were fighting in extremely well in all instances
2. The US tended to have very poor geographical intel
3. The Vietnamese had much more time to prepare (booby traps, tunnel networks, etc) and were able to use these preparations throughout the entirety of the war.
4. A heavily formal approach to military conduct. The closest analogy is to why the British performed so poorly in the American revolutionary war. Basically, walk along the road and get ambushed.
5. The Vietnamese didn't have much ground to fall back on and they were fighting for their beliefs as opposed to questionable US involvement.
6. The US had practically no experience in jungle warfare, whereas the Vietnamese obviously had plenty. This applies both on a command and a soldier level. A soldier sent through training then shipped to Vietnam had literally no idea how the hell to fight in that situation.
7. US soldiers much more vulnerable to jungle diseases (malaria, yellow fever, etc).
8. On a high command level plans were made that oftentimes didn't properly account for terrain. ie: US troops charging up hills or going through a field to attack an encampment in the edge of a forest.
9. Lack of support on the US home front.
10. Helicopter pilots dying all over the place. My father got drafted during Vietnam and despite severely wanting to be a helicopter pilot, he avoided it at all costs due to the fact that survival rates for helicopter pilots in Vietnam averaged in well under an hour.

Re: Vietnam
I've seen a page regarding some traps the Vietnamese used (Might've been on CJ) and those traps could've been in a Saw movie. Pretty sick...
How many fatalities were there in Vietnam?
