I bet my dad that i could solve this riddle within the hour and i lost
Here it is:
You have 12 coins and you have a scale to see which side is heavier and which is lighter (See image below).
11 coins are equal and 1 is different. You have 3 weigh moment. You can put as many coins on as you wish. You have to be able to say which coin is different and if it's either lighter or heavier.
Good luck

I simply don't have the patience for this.
But you were betting, so what did you lose?

I know this isn't right, cos it's too simple but
Couldn't you just take the one different coin, and take one of the 11, and see which is heavier?
Oh this should be a thread to, keep the riddles coming

You wouldn't know which coin is the different one, but yeah you could just keep comparing coins until you find 2 that are different, and then know if its heavier/lighter couldn't you?

come on guys seriously?
12 coins:
Put 6 on 1 side, 6 on other.
You have 6 that now weigh more.
Take those 6 and palce 3 on each side.
You now have 3 coins which weigh more.
Now place 1 on each side and keep 1 off the scales.
If one of the coins on the scale weighs more than the other, that coin is the heaviest.
If they weigh the same, the remaining coin is the different coin.
Super easy >.>

Nice one Drofder. But in the third step you can't say for 100% certain if the coin is lighter or heavier. You can't say with full convidence which coin is the wrong one and that is part of the riddle.
woops, nvm. You already know what group of coins is heavier. You solved it and make us look stupid.

0/10.
You can't tell if the different one is heavier or lighter.

Read again Infinite, I think he did nail it. UNLESS the coin is actually lighter and you had to go with the groups of coins which were lighter. So even now it's not correct
IF the coin is indeed heavier than the normal coins Drofder's method is correct. But if it was lighter Drofder's method wouldn't work.

No, fair enough, one is lighter or heavier. Missed that part of riddle. (Unless it was changed!!!

I'm not a retard Drofder

I got to that. The point is you need to know which is lighter or heavier.
I figured you have to compare one of the two remaining coins with one of the coins you've proven to be one of the normal coins. But if they are equal you still can't tell if it's heavier or lighter.

I jsut kept reading heavy while skim reading, so just assumed that was what was being looked for.

didnt read all, but solution is easy... make 3 groups with 4 coins. 1 group on each side and one outside. If one sight is heavier you know the coin must be there... if they are equal its in the third group. Now split the group where the heavy coin is 2 groups of 2 coins. If a side is heavier you know the coins must be there... now you just have 2 coins left... just see again which is heavier...
btw. i know this quiz with 9 coins and 2 weight moments. first is round is nearly the same... 3 groups with 3 coins... and you know which group is the one with the heavy coin. Now one coin on each side and one outside... if one side is heavier you notice this and if they are equal it is the coin outside...
i think this quiz is a bit harder... cause for the quiz with 12 coins and 3 weight moments there are more solutions

And that is why you and me both failed to get the answer correct and in the mean time looked stupid.
