Odd method of strafe jumping? easier?

Post by mobius1 » July 9th, 2005, 11:51 pm

i was at a jump server with someone and i asked them to show me how they strafe jumped, since it looked different than most i had seen. he said he ran forward, then hit left/right really quick and then jumped. it went as far as a strafe jump, but he didnt even have to move his mouse! i thought it was cool and would help my jumping a lot but i couldnt get it to work. its all in the timing i guess. anyone here seen this method and know how exactly to do it? sounds like its something you could bind even :D

while im at it i wondered if you could tell me what you think the easiest and most effective way of strafe jumping is. the way i learned is tough and needs a bit of space to do, so on some very small platforms its hard or impossible to do. i can post a demo. it also requires you to do it exactly right with no error everytime, which is tough since sometimes you dont move the mosue enough or whatnot.

thanks in advance, and even if you could post a demo of a good way to strafe jump, with a little caption on what exactly youre doing itd be much appriciated!

OK m8 heres the deal....

There are many ways of strafe jumping...

You must try out the method that works for you...

This way is odd, because the mouse is the most important part of strafe jumping...

The strafe button is only to keep you going in a straight line...

Destinys new way that he talks about in the strafe jumping tutorial in my oppinion is the best way because you have alot of control and you can see where you are jumping from.. THis allows you to jump from the edge making you not have to jump as far to reach your destination..

There is no need to make a demo.. If you would like me to show you, hit me up on xfire and ill be glad to help you out.. This is not something you learn over night, nor something that can be taught by someone completely... The burdon is on you to learn, although i can give you some pointers and tips along the way..

Good luck with strafe jumping.. My xfire name is Murphy001 and i hope i can help you out..

Strafe jumping.

The reason you MUST strafe, is that it confuses the Q3 engine (somehow making the engine believe you are going faster, or some other BS).

The mouse, is the second part of it, the flick is what makes the distance.

Check the tutorials on how to strafe by Destiny.

Drofder, thats a weird way of putting it.. I was told by De$t!ny that it is just to keep you in a straight line.. I can strafe jump without it lol.. Same distance just not very accurate :D

"Strafe jump

Strafe jumping allows the player to move faster and jump farther. It involves jumping while moving forward (or backward) and strafing left or right. Strafe jumping can be done in Quake, Quake II and Quake III. It is a bug involving air acceleration."

Taken from wikipedia.
The only thing it says about straight line is this..
"Alternating between left and right strafe on each jump results in nearly straight-line motion at very high speed"

but that is used in Quake, RTCW and ET where bunny hopping and strafe jumping makes you go faster in a straight line.

:D

ill practice this method but i think im still gonna look into the quickstrafe thing i talked about. he left the server cuz ppl were tk'ing :x so i never got his xfire or anything. it seemed like, since it didnt involve the mouse, it could go the same exact way each time, with NO effort whatsoever, and almost went farther than most normal methods. very odd.

Maybe after holding one strafe he changed to another to straighten out?

Thats what i did. just right strafe after jumping, and about half way there hit left strafe.
But i wasnt abled to strafe as far as with other strafejumps.

ok someone good try this. i kinda figured out that if you r8un straight, then (all fairly quickly) hit left strafe, then get OFF left qucikly hit right strafe AND jump at the same time. like HOLD w, hit a, hit d+space. it kinda worked. im getting there. :)
