Thinking of getting a new PC.... kinda.

Post by Infinite » September 9th, 2009, 9:51 pm

Well, right now I'm stuck with a few parts in my computer which I'm happy about, and a few others which I'm not. Basically, I'm looking for a new motherboard, CPU, and RAM. As of now, I have:

Video Card: EVGA 260 GTX 896MB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130462 (virtually that card, although not exactly, and I haven't had a SINGLE problem with mine, besides having to remove a few LED cables to be able to fit it into my case).

PowerSupply: Antec 650W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817371021 (again, not exactly the same, but extremely close).

Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811133086 (got mine for $100 on a sale at Fry's Electronics :D)

I think that's all I need to list (if I needed to list anything at all for compatibility issues >.>). I haven't messed with putting anything into a computer for a while, so I don't know exactly what else I need to post here :S. I also have all the Peripherals I need (monitor, keyboard, etc.), and all I need is a good motherboard/cpu/ram combination to use.

I've looked myself into some parts which I would like to have (such as http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819115036) but I'd like to ask here first before jumping to ordering anything.

If you want to know everything, I guess I'll just include everything that I know:

I have a 22 inch monitor from ViewSonic (got it ages ago), another monitor which is like 1280 x 1024 or something and both monitors are LCDs (don't know anything about it besides that), a G15, a mouse from my old Acer computer (this mouse owns), don't know exactly what the motherboard is besides that it MIGHT be an ASUS, I have 2 GBs of RAM (used to have 3, but took 2 x 512 mb out of it) and I don't know what brand they are atm, and the last thing I can think of is that I have a Q6600 intel core duo processor 2.4ghz (don't know the bus or anything in specific about it). I don't see why it is necessary to know any of that information since I'm replacing the motherboard, and any compatibility issues should only deal with the processor, RAM, and video card (which isn't that much of a deal in these days since most video cards use PCI Express 2.0 or something similar, and most modern motherboards have at least one port for it) and I'm replacing the processor, RAM, and motherboard, so all I need is a setup which will have a correct combination of them :S.

My budget is up to $500 max. I'm aiming for the $300-$400 range.

EDIT: Forgot to mention my HDDs. I know they are 2 x 300 GB HDDs, but I don't know the exact RPM or anything else about them.

I needed to know what you're starting out with, because from there I can judge what would be an adequate step up in technology rather than just a waste of money from such a small increase.

Oops, sorry, I forgot about this topic.

1. Why do you need a new motherboard? both your old and new processors are LGA775.
2. That RAM is pretty expensive.
3. I'm not sure that processor is going to give you enough of an increase in performance to make it worth the price.
4. Do you have a 64 bit operating system?

1.my old motherboard is poorly designed (or at least not designed for gaming) and my video card goes right over a few slots where I plug my LEDs into. I'll also take a look at the BIOS in a bit, but I was told that I couldn't OC my cpu or ram if I had bought a pre-made computer (it sounded silly to me, but I never bothered to check).
2. True, but it's better than the ram I have atm, and also not made my some random company which I don't know of (When I looked at it, it was some random company made in taiwan or something, and I had never heard of the company).
3. FSB is higher, it's 45nm instead of 65nm, it'll run cooler, so I can OC it more, it has a higher operating frequency, it's L2 Cache is higher, and it uses less voltage.
4. no.
