And sam your right it would be impossible for a planet to reach earth in 3 years. What it takes the earth 1 year to orbit the sun and thats over like a maximon of about 300000000 km, but thats in a circle or overall. So if a differwent planet were to do that distance but in a straight line it would take alot more than 3 years to reach us surely :S.

Well by definition I believe a planet has to be orbiting, so it wouldn't be coming in a straight line. However I guess it is possible for its orbit to be so big that over the distance involved it could be approximated to a straight line. Also because we cover that distance (you say 3x10^8km) doesn't mean that all other planets take the same sized orbit (just compare Mercury with neptune for example, vastly different). There is no reason that the planets have to orbit at the. What I am saying is... I believe it is amazingly unlikely for there to be a planet on the correct orbit that just happens to pass directly through earth when earth is in the correct position. It would need to be travelling from very very very VERY far away at an incredible speed on an extremely huge orbit.

That's very true, and looking at that criteria it's most definitely impossible. You'd have to find a gigantic source of gravity to overrule the insanely fast velocity that planet would be traveling at, and once you did such a force of gravity would counteract the sun's, causing us to be orbiting the same object. The entire ordeal is ridiculous and based on yet another misinterpretation of the past.
