£700 Gaming System

Post by Drofder2004 » December 19th, 2008, 1:35 am

Ok, this is not for me, but a mate.
Can someone recommend decent parts for a system worth £700 or less.

Does NOT require monitor, mouse and Keyboard.

ok here i go!

Now i don't know much about how mother boards work but nowadays this is what i suggest to buy

Processor - Q6600 Intel core 2 duo - $190 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819115017
Graphics card - 260 GTX - $180-$220
PSU - Antec NeoPower 550W - $80 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817103941
Ram - Corsair 2 x 2gb (4gb) 240-Pin DDR2 (PC2 8500) - $100 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820145197
Case - depends on your motherboard i believe, but if you want a decent looking case, it can cost from $50-$150
MotherBoard - Again, I'm not sure how Motherboards are compatible with everything else, so i'll estimate $150-$200 for a good one.

Overall cost - $190 + $200 + $80 + $100 + $100 + $175 or... $845

or £558

Someone else can add to this if they want to ofc, This is just a rough draft of the possibilities of what you can get xD. If he really wants to step it up, he can get a 280 gtx or a Q9550. If you add in a Q9550, the price goes to £643, or if u add a 280 GTX, it jumps to £679

Instead of creating a whole new thread ill just post here.
It's time I got myself a decent pc, and it's christmas soon so what the hell.
I have some questions, this is my first pc that I will be building (If I get it), so I've NEVER done this before. I want to go with Nvidia for my graphics, so GTX260, or 280, the price difference here is aprox 200 bucks, of course I haven't shopped around yet, just going by a local pc shop price list. I want the pc to last a year or so and be able to handle new games, so is it worth the extra 200+ dollars?. For the CPU I've been looking at the Intel Core 2 Duo E8400, that's $258, or the E8500 for $282, I don't really want to spend $426 on the E8600, so yeah, I want the pc to last a year or two as I said, so which CPU should I get. For the case and psu, I've chosen the cheapest ones, and I don't need hard drives, moniters, keyboard, mouse, or ram :D.

PRICE LIST FROM MSY FOR PC:
CPU:Intel Core 2 Duo E8400-258
Motherboard:MSI G31M3-L A-I-O-59
GPU:Nvidia GTX 260 896mb-415 OR 1gb GTX280-629
Case:AOPEN G520B-72
PSU:SHAW 720W(Dual Fan)-29

258+59+415+72+29=833 WITH GTX260
-
258+59+629+72+29=1011 WITH GTX280
Also, would I get better performance if I went with the cheaper CPU and got the 280, or a better CPU, and the 260?.

As far as I believe, the E8400 will perform better (usually) than a quad core nowadays, but is set to change when support comes in.

It does perform better, but the quad core is great if you want to have a million things on your screen at the same time like me XD.

I think if youre after performance gaming the e8400 would be best, but for an actualy home PC and gaming system I would go with the quad.

The quad core is the Q series right?. The Q6600 and the Q8200 are the same price, so which one?, they aren't 3.0 ghz, so is that ok, or do I need to get the Q9650, which is $855, where as the Q6600 and the Q8200 are both $289, and the E8400 is $258.

That's not correct. It perform better in just a few software (such as Call of Duty 4) but that's only because CoD4 doesn't support quad.

The Q6600 is far better than E8400 in stock settings in everything except for Cod4 (and maybe some other foreign games) but once you clock it, it's going to perform a lot better
