School Essays

Post by Soviet » November 3rd, 2008, 6:35 am

Every once in a while they give you a good one. This particular one - describe honesty's impact on the world and how it affects your life.
My Essay wrote:Honesty

There are many morals and values which most people say they adhere to. These morals govern our every action, even to things like voting for world leaders. Honesty is one of these many values that almost everyone believes all others should possess. Ironically, though, like most other values, these beliefs seem to be solely for self satisfaction and to preserve one's naivety of the world. Most of these values seem to be practically non existent almost everywhere one hopes them to be. Many of these locations include court, government, and children. No one, except perhaps in legends, has been completely truthful about everything. Dishonesty is another puzzle piece is the destructive nature of humans, one that defines our world that we live in and controls all our lives in one way or another.

As always, America is a giant mess of optimism and hope. Yet, the places where one puts their hope for honesty and integrity are usually some of the most dishonest in the world. As the presidential elections come nearer, the candidates attempt to solidify their moral values and patriotism in any way they can. McCain turns to his torture stories and Obama alludes to the bible whenever possible. Both these candidates try and prove their honesty in whatever way they can. As is the nature of the general public, the giant mass of low IQ followers, they soak it up, they believe it, and they never question their choices again after they have made their decision and chosen their position. People become so optimistic towards their rashly chosen beliefs that they begin to disregard the fact that so much of politics is based around corruption, deceit, bribery, and backstabbing. I believe it can be said without almost any question that no one who has ever run for president has ever been completely honest or maintained any noticeably high level of moral integrity throughout their political career. The nature of politics, the very thing that runs this world and the lives of everyone in it, is that of dishonesty. One needs to look no further than Clinton's scandals, Nixon's crimes, Theodore Roosevelt's lies of his past, or George W. Bush's extremely questionable behavior to see that dishonesty is the pumping through the veins of politics and our government.

Worse even than the obvious corruption of politics is its spread to the children of the world. Modern education has evolved into a roaring beast of absent-minded ideas and obvious disregard for those whom they are instructing. The idea of high level classes was originally good, give children more difficult concepts, then teach them how people arrived at these concepts they are learning. However, instead they have created a system in which the child willing to sacrifice the most of his childhood, the most of his happiness, and the most of his freedom of mind succeeds. This is the same child who will one day be in the government fighting to get to the top just as they learned in school. This is the same child who will rule over the current leaders as they watch the corruption they learned from their forefathers passed to their children. Perhaps some may even be lucky enough to see it passed down to their grandchildren. Now, why is this child corrupted, have they not learned to follow the system their entire life? I can say through vast personal experience that a very large percentage of students in higher level classes perform constant, repetitive acts of academic dishonesty due to excessive workload. The saddest part about this is the schools realize. As the years go by the attempts to quell cheating continue to increase, more and more measures are taken. However, do they work? No, I am inclined to think, once again through experience, that they simply persuade the students to become better at lying, cheating, and sneaking through and around the system. This, of course, eventually translates into dishonesty outside of school in whatever profession that child prodigy chooses to undertake. While attempts to stop cheating worsen, cheating worsens. While cheating worsens, dishonesty continues to breed and spread. As dishonesty spreads, the moral fiber of our society is slowly being washed away by the rivers of ignorant educational methods.

This corruption that eventually spreads to the executive branch of our government also, of course, works its way into the other parts of our government as well. The legislative branch is a painfully obvious example with its constant passing of bills with whispered addendums and never ending blackmail. In To Kill a Mockingbird the Finch children see a man lie right before their eyes and, not only does he get away with it, but he condemns another man to death because of it. In this instance, dishonesty prevails. While it may be true that our judicial system has come far since then, I fail to be optimistic enough to believe it has come so far that corruption has passed from it altogether. In fact, along with the breeding of corruption in our children, it would surprise me if dishonesty was not present.

Belief in honesty gives hope, however false it may be. While this can be good, in the end it is bad. This optimistic fairytale world that people live in with honesty causes them to make painfully bad decisions in response to pure denial of the truth that stares them in the face. Dishonesty is has a firm hold in the highest political and social regions of the world, and it is being bred and taught to our lowest parts as well. Unfortunately, dishonesty will continue to exist as long as humans do. Such cyclical conditions are the very essence of our beings and govern much of what happens to us. Just as it is in our nature to gain power, care for our families, and hope for the best, it is in our nature to spread our beliefs at all costs. All history shows its spread from the beginning of man and indicates no end to it. Some may argue we have defeated other human flaws in the past, and this is just another one to overcome. Perhaps that is so, but, I hope we do not. I hope we don't defeat honesty as we have defeated racism, defeat honesty as we have defeated communism, or defeat honesty as we have defeated radical religion. In fact, I fear such an occurrence. “All movements go too far.” - Bertrand Russell

Much love on that Soviet.

If this is your own work, its needs some correction before handing in, never lose marks to grammar ;)

"While attempts to stop cheating worsen" should be "While attempts to stop cheating worsening"
(Although I may be reading that line in a different way, the sentence makes sense, but also doesn't)

"it would surprise me" should be "it wouldn't surprise me"

"Dishonesty is has" should be "Dishonesty has"

"this is the schools realize" personally, I would change 'the' to 'that'.

It may also be that your second paragraph (but mainly your third) could be split into 2 paragraphs, making it clearer to read, but again, this is just preference.

More embedded quotations! That's what my school seems to make a point of -_-. Interesting way to discuss 'Honesty'. Was a good read.

Yeh, I used to be told that shit too, but this was a little more "opinionated" than a standard essay.

You can prove anything to be right if you disprove the opposing argument  .

Recently i wrote an essay and my teacher took off points for "summarizing my essay in the first paragraph". lol? isn't the whole point of the first paragraph to state what your answers to the question(s) are, then in the body paragraphs explain them in detail? Unless my past 11 years of school has been full of lies in my English class x.x.

already turned it in, but thanks. Typically I'd go over the grammar, but I did it in like 30 minutes :P Also, it was supposed to be formatted into 5 paragraphs, otherwise I would have split those up.

I have one a week... But that's what happens when you take a shit subject like Theology. I had to spend 4 hours in Birmingham University library making notes for a coursework essay. That was a bad day.

I'd say it's the one closest to the train station. On their computers it was called the "main building".
