Whats ya internet speed.

Post by steveuk » April 4th, 2008, 11:12 am

Hay.. ok just intrested in knowing what peoples internet speeds are.
Some Questions, just like to know for self intrest.

Who's ya provider,
Whats ya cost of your internet connection.
Do you get much trouble with internet connections

Since i upgraded yesterday 4th April 2008 i got from 2mbt to upto 20-mbt connection for just a 5p per month upgrade price,
Saving me colseing my normal account and reopening a new account they just upgraded it..

Here my latest speed test

Now hopefully i can play a bit more COD4 without so much lagg.

My university connection speed can be seen in my signature :)

Provider: My uni
Cost: £3000/year tuition fees plus £116.60/week accommodation costs ;)
Trouble: Ping is 2000+ for games at all times other than weekends and 2am to 8am on weekdays (so I'm either tired or drunk when I get to play CoD4...)

As for my home internet...

Speed: 1880/366kbps down/up
Provider: Nildram.co.uk
Cost: Don't know
Trouble: None, other than it's frustratingly slower than my uni connection :P On the whole, still good though.

About £15 ish (not sure tbh, I don't pay it)
Main issue the fair user policy, although its 'unlimited' they moan at you if you do any downloading between 6pm and 11pm. Between 11pm and 6pm you can download 100's og GB if you wish, but between 6pm and 11pm, they get shirty if you do anything other than read email + browse the net (for example if you were to download maps from a CJ server, they would send you a threatning email)
Thats awesome, and it sucks at the same time.

Virgin Media - 4mb (free upgrade to 10mb, sometime this year)
Price: Unsure due to it being bundled with phone and TV.
Pros: Great connection, rarely any downtime, pings are great.
Cons: They are soon to introduce P2P monitoring and the '3 strike' rule.

Dude ring them (Virgin)and ask them about the 20-gig upgrade. if ya paying more than £18, like i was on Virgin for a shit 2meg connection ya may get the 20-mbt upgrade for just 5-pence per month.. ya'll get a New Modem and a FRee Wireless router to.

No harm in ringing Virgin Customer support.. In fact if you call, ask for EXT: 6715 and ask for james. he's the one who offered me the upgrade. He said the bill will show £35;00+ but ya get a £18 -credit to your account each month. so ya still be paying the same cost roughtly maybe 5p more for getting a 20-mbt connection. i think this upgrad is if you have all 3 services like i do, but my TV is free i downgraded coz of wife moaning about the bills, butthey game me FREE limited Freeview channels for a year.

So whats 5p -60p per year.lol just about buy a bag of chrisps with that.

The p2p Monitoring could be untrue, coz i asked the Guy james will it effect my Downloads, and he said no i still have unlimited. i downloaded like 5 -7 gigs of PUBLIC DOMAIN movies last nite each around 700-megs per movie, took like 8 mins each movie, normaly took on a 2-mbt connection anythink like 45mins-5 hours for each movie. I be glad when my New modem and Wireless router arrives, may boost my spped more, my modem is a old Webstar black modem , im fluttering between 5-mbts to 19.5mbts, tho i been told this webstar was only ment to take the max of 8mbts

Go on call them get more speed for ya money unless ya happy with 10mbts.. do you get full 10mbt or does it flutter up and down.?

here a usefull tool shows ya online bandwidth upload and download while on line. DU-Meter http://dl.hageltech.com/DUMeter-Install.exe http://www.dumeter.com/download.php

you must of got the Free 10-meg upgrade no less than 6 months ago, thinking of it, as i remeber a poster they sent to my door. still the 4meg is £25 per month my 2-meg is £18 per month 20-gig is £35 per month. i got the upgrade from 2-mbt to 20-mbt for kust 5p per month like i said above message....
2-mbt £18
20-mbt £35
£17 will be credited to my accouint each month i was told, i asked this in writeing and can cancell at any time, but for 5p more amonth no fucking way im keeping the upgrade, and the new modem & wireless router.

The poster was an advertisement for upcoming upgrades. My upgrade is not yet even scheduled, yet I received the email over 2 months ago. It is simply a ploy to keep customers interested.

With the current bills that are going on in this house hold, that 5p extra would be too much :P

Nah, I seriously despise talking to any one in sales, their jobs are to entice you into sales and make you spend more money. This often leads them to bonuses in their job. I do not trust anyone who works with commission based rewards...

Nope the guy told me it,ll be a seperate modem, so i want it, coz he told me he was ordering it now, then when i mentioned Wireless router, he said, oh yea i order one of them for you to, so it sounded like 2 seperate items.
Time is now 01:53 ,aand i decided to try out the new Wireless router and take my other one off seems to work ok, too 3 mins to connect up to pc, wire it up, install Software, and it worked right away without giving me any headaches installing it.

im just not sure if it is a 54-or a 108 wireless router, says nothink in the plain white box, just did a ~Google for information, and found this link.
http://www.netgear.com/Products/Routers ... ifications
but still no info in of 54/108/ ?
Sell on Ebay for £33:00 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Netgear-WGR614-Wi ... 0242954267,so it no top model. lol

Ahh found it, it a 54mbt KWGR614 – 54 Mbps Wireless-G Open Source Router ... So it can handle up to 54mbts only.. on well i did get it FREE.lol

Virgin use separate Routers and Modems (infact, they only use to supply modem).

yea they not long been doing routers, so it's one of there New upgrade things they doing..

No modem arrived today as yet 2:15pm.. My router arrive yesterday at 9am via UP.s Deleivery.

Router dont seem to be as good as mine i did a few speed tests and max im getting is 10-13mbts, on my own router i was
getting 10-19-mbts.. but i;ll keep this one connected for now so when new modem arrives (if it arrives) i can compare the speed tests with new modem from old modem, and then do my old router with new modem, ect, mix and match kinda thing, see what works better with what.

Edited:
todays speed test... seems to be working fater now, i wounder if they sorted out the issues in my area yet.
