FPS question

Ok, 555 being the highest jump number:
"(other recommended jump numbers are 43, 71, 91, 333, 555)"

i type in /com_maxfps 555 and hit enter, and my fps does not cap off at 555 it goes up into the 900s... any help for stoping this?
