As an absolute beginner, I would recommend the same. Sign-up on their site and start downloading the CoD1 starting tutorials.

Do not try and do to much straight away, most mappers will start by building a house. There are tutorials to help you do this. Remember, as a beginner, don't expect yourself to be doing anything amazing within the first few weeks.

Yep, tis a shame. They used to have unlimited DL until the site got v.big and then they capped it for non-subscribers (if you are willing to pay, they will uncap it :P)

Only Drofder made the ultimate maps when he started

Yea lol....my first map isn't that good either

I made a "jump" map....it were 10 platforms with a distance of 8 grid :x
Then I have searched for hours how to make a .PK3 :x
and then I finally found http://www.modsonline.com and I made a .PK3, played it.....
And just when I started to jump, I walked over the platforms.....my jumps were awful
...you will probably learn the most of your mapping-skills by making testmaps  ....atleast I did...
and after a few maps you'll get a bit more knowledge map by map :D
