I sometimes get this when I want to open a corrupted .map file. Does it do this with every map you try to open or just a specific map?

lol, a '{' is missed in your .map file. this may happen only to entities. for cod1, there was a small program fixing it. but its not difficult to write a program that counts "{" and "}". someone should make it... or i will do it some day.
even if it doesnt deal with brackets, it definitely touches entities. try removing half entities from your map file (with a text editor) and then open the map.
