Possibly the funniest analogy of the situation ever.
1. Steam is not bad, nobody has said that, the point is that they failed to protect data.
2. Steam is a company, it has many departments. Only one of those departments failed.
3. Companies that store data that could be worth MORE than the company itself, have a duty of care to protect that data.
4. Stolen data cannot be recovered. This is not a stolen passport, this is data, it can be copied and distributed worldwide quickly.

Internet and credit card fraud is at an all time high, and yet when you are told they had access to a database with credit cards (albeit, encrypted), we are happy to simply 'change our password' and continually ignore the fact the company failed to protect the data.
