Need a word for an essay!

There's a word I'm trying to think of for an essay I am writing!

The word I am looking for is one used when describing someone who is good hearted and would maybe choose to do something illegally if it means that it benefits for people.

For example, someone who knew of an illegal immigrant (who moved because of huge trouble finding work in his homecountry) living in the neighbourhood wouldn't snitch them because although not snitching them would mean they were living illegally, it would be the 'good person' thing to do.

Can't think of the word, sorry if it's difficult to understand but I had to write that all down while it was still in my train of thought!

There was a specific word I was looking for, our teacher told us it in class but I cannot for the life of me remember it. Humane isn't far off though, in terms of meaning.

Righteous would be the best word I would imagine.
Someone who is righteous will use morals to guide their decision.
