Moose tried to make a surf map for CoD4 few months ago but you simple can't turn more then like 3 degrees while you're sliding so not possible (with the default settings).

I think it should be possible with a little modding but that would take all the fun away if it's not already in the game(like bounce) :/

Look at it in the form of "laws of motion" and equal and opposite forces.

If you are going at 'x' speed towards the slope (strafing) and the slope (with gravity) is trying to slide you back down at the same speed 'x' then you are at equal forces, hence you stay on the slope, obviously the forward momentum has no opposite effect and therefore you travel forward.

By angling your strafe either away or towards the slope you are able to unbalance the forces and move up or down the slope.

Not sure if that is the correct reasoning but it makes sense to me... :D
