Re: Not balanced for lean!
I suppose I didnt feel attatched to the people I were mercilessly blowing to pieces, I just thought the reasoning behind it to be interesting and unusual. Daring might be a good word for infinity ward. But then again, their whole game plan about MW2 has been a daring taking I guess.

If you think this much about games, I wonder how you people live your lives with the Horror films that are produced?
Jason, Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, Norman Bates, Leatherface, Ghostface (scream), many, many, many more. Countless innocent victims being brutally murdered and tortured, yet your concern is one games short scene.
What is more realistic, my animated game or the worlds films using REAL PEOPLE as actors?

The difference is the context. I never had a problem with prototype's violence because it had no relation to reality, same with the movies you mentioned. That scene however, is reality to a frightening degree.

So films such as: The Silence of the Lambs, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Psycho, although loosely based on one TRUE STORY, is less of a shock from a scene based on a fictional plot?Soviet wrote:The difference is the context. Even films such as Die Hard (and similar action films) have the death of random people going about their daily lives, some with plausible storylines, are also nothing compared to a game?
Sorry, but I cannot level on this one, I cannot accept this as anything but a minor plot in the story.

Yes, and there wouldn't be an issue if we were watching this terrorist massacre from third person. However, if watching Die Hard involved you seeing the entire movie from first person and pulling the trigger every time a civilian dies, it would be a little different. There's a big difference between telling a story and shooting people.

Yeh I think I feel the same as Soviet. Couldn't really explain it at first.
In that massacre we did it ourselves. But in that movie we see someone else do stuff.
Like I said before, I liked the mission, but it is brutal.

Re: Not balanced for lean!
Sorry, but in a situation of scripted events, narrative, third person or first person, makes no difference.
Seeing the story unfold from behind the mask is no different then seeing the story from over their shoulder.
I can understand where you are coming from, but I do not agree that the perspective in which a situation is shown affects the way a situation is perceived.

it's not the way it's perceived. The thing is that in one way it is just perceived, but in the other you are actually creating the experience. It is a whole level above simply perceiving it.
Re: Not balanced for lean!
I thought the airport scene gave us a chance to see the scene from a different perspective, and I enjoyed it. Am I going to go out tomorrow with a bulletproof vest, a LMG, a couple mags, and a few friends and go out to the nearest airport to massacre a few hundred people now? Obviously not. If you have such a mindset that you cannot bare to play through that scene, that's why they give you the option of skipping it. I don't see a single problem with them putting in that scene into the SP, and I thought it was a great addition to see what happens, not just on the "good" (for lack of a better word) side, from a first person perspective.

I don't think people are going to be influenced into killing people because of it, I just find it unnecessary and distasteful. As a first person shooter, the game is just that, a game. A scene like that requires no skill or capability, it is simply meant for immersion purposes. I'm not sure exactly why because typically I would think of it oppositely, but I don't like it at all. I'm fine with dark and grotesque games, but one that so lightly handles such tragic events seems a bit over the line. I guess for me it's kind of like if one of the earlier CoDs had a scene where you played as a Nazi on a firing squad, killing line and after line of Jews tied up against a wall. Sure, it gets you more immersed in the world, but it's just...disgusting.

Would you have felt more comfortable if you simply watched and not pressed any buttons?

Re: Not balanced for lean!
Yes, I would have. Instead of committing the action you are simply viewing the depiction of it.
Re: Not balanced for lean!
It's like watching a CGI film of Obama being assassinated then playing a game in which you assassinate Obama. In the first the guy who made the movie is a sick fuck, in the game you're the sick fuck.
Re: Not balanced for lean!
The purpose of a game is to provide some sort of challenge. If it is just shooting people who can't fight back, then what is the point in role playing? Sure, it isn't real, but are you actually enjoying killing people, does it actually provide entertainment value? If it does then that's kind of messed up.
