overcoming network throttle?

Hi. Virgin have now started throttling after a 3gb bandwidth (sucks) at peak times. After you go over the limit you have 25% speed for 5 hours. While at 25% speed my utorrent goes death slow and drags the whole internet down with it. Now seeing as i can munch through 3gb in an hour, and the 'peak time' is 10am to midnight, how can I overcome the throttle? I dont care about going faster than th limit, i just want to be able to download faster than 5kb/s in utorrent while im over the limit.

Cheers. If I cant get my speed back to 10 meg, is there any way utorrent can still work well? Everything else runs good enough but utorrent is like 4kb/s (rarely over 10) at these times when i SHOULD be able to get 250 kb/s theoretically.

You have 12 hours to download...

Even on the lowest connection you can downlaod an estimated 21GB (@512kbs). Its called traffic management, manage your traffic...

Maybe I cant download overnight? And your post doesn't answer what I asked. I asked how I could get utorrent to work while i was restricted, not how I can download when it ISNT peak time. But thanks for the answer.

What I now wish to know is why my dad gets all the connection. My downlaods were fine while restricted to 250kbs i was downloading at a self capped limit of 100 kb/s to let enough for other stuff and suddenly my dad starts downloading on his laptop and he has the dominant in the internet traffic. He used 100% of the internet grinding everything else to a halt.

Its so annoying, but he wont notice if I make mine the primary (he is shit at tech). How can I do this?

Download Limit (kilobytes) / Peak Time Remaining (seconds) = Capped Download Speed (kb/s)
3Gb in 3 hours...
3145728 / 10800 = 291Kb/s
Cap your download at 290Kb/s and you will stay under you the limit and also your file should be nearly finished before offpeak time kicks in.

Welcome to the world of Aussie internet, ISP's in other countries seem to be taking ideas from here a lot, the 250 gb caps and now this.

This has been a feature of most internet companies in the UK for some time. Virgin Media (previously NTL and Telewest) gained a lot of subscription fees by selling their "capless" internet. Now with a massive majority share of the market, they can restrict those who are paying.

Just for further note, you can by all means cancel your subscription with Virgin because of this new cap being introduced, it is a change of contract.

Ah, caps have been around as long as I can remember, even back on dial up.

Dude you dont understand. I dont want to download 3gb in 3 hours or whatever. I mean WHEN i get capped my download isnt at 250 kb/s or what it should be. its more like, 8 or 9 and it eats the whole bandwidth.

I am seeing your point. Its just when I want to download a , say 5gb file by the end of tonight and it gets almost finished, say it needs 100mb to finish, That would take hours at 8 or 9 kb/s but the cap 'says' i getting 250 kb/s

What exactly are you downloading to require more than 3Gb a day?

If you are pirating software, games, music, maybe you should accept what you are doing is illegal and having to wait 3 days to complete a big download is not going to kill you.

Patience is your problem, not your download cap.

Streaming HD movies, downloading HD movies from Itunes etc is legal last time I checked. I find it hilarious that your capped speed is my normal speed.

Since when did we even establish you had a cap or were talking about your cap (which is hilarious that you are not capped)?
This thread is relating to Virgin media network throttle... Do they even have Virgin Media in nation of segregation?

Oh, and stop swinging your giant e-peen in my direction, my download throttle and speed limit (no cap...) is enough for me to continue my daily life without a problem, good luck with your HD Streams.
