Look at the 3d window (top right of radiant) and while holding shift, use your left mouse button to click it...

Is this a brush, a patch or a terrain mesh?
I'm hoping it is a patch as this is an easy solution to a common problem.
Patches are curves, and there is a button that stops you from selecting curves.
It is 28 icons along from the left and is a little picture of a red cross going through the word curve. Make sure that is deselected.
