Let's continue it here, this is kind of interesting.
We're against warez but I'm positive that every single member here has atleast downloaded something or you're filthy rich like The President (After all, he is The President).
This is a CoD based community so I despise (Yes, I am serious) people who come here and state that they have an illegal copy. I simply expect people to buy this game. I couldn't really be bothered about what you do with your other games. Now I know some people download games to check it out, and if it's good they buy it. We've had some people on these forums who admitted they had an illegal copy and eventually bought the real game. I think Berlinboy is a good example.
Now why would be the reason to download games ? It's pretty simple. A lack of money.
I know most of us are really into gaming (And some are also interested in the technical side of computers). I am only into gaming, I have no clue about parts in your PC, about all the extra handy things you can do with your PC, building websites, or the more 'simple' things like creating signatures. I just don't really care about all this technical stuff (Doesn't mean I don't like the results, because I do like the result).
I think it's fun to checkwhat games I have. I got some series I am loyal to.
Unreal Tournament and Medal of Honor, the classics (I don't have UT3 though)
Call of Duty (Classic, UO, 2, 4 and WaW).
Command & Conquer (The First Decade, C&C3 Tiberium Wars and Kane's Wrath, Red Alert 3)
Myst (Various Myst games, from the very first classic from the Sega to the latest)
Blizzard games (Diablo 1 and 2 and the expansion, Warcraft 3 + The Frozen Throne, Starcraft, World of Warcraft and its expansions)
The Orange Box
And various stand alone games like Left 4 Dead, Prototype, Oblivion (I bought this game twice due to my first copy being broken on installation) and Fallout.
Now it's a lot of games. But not a lot of games I bought over the years. Apart of WoW ofcourse. I've bought all of them. There are some other games which I simply don't spend money on like the Anno series or The Settlers and Need for Speed. I like them, but I don't buy them. I don't know why really.
I've spend a LOT more money on my GC (I only got a handful of games on my N64). I only got pure Nintendo titles. With a few exceptions like Resident Evil for example. Even though some of its games were GC only.
I've got over 50 Gamecube games. Now assume atleast 40 of those I bought myself. And they are 50-60 euros a piece. Some games I've received from my birthday, 2 or 3 games are for my sister and some were really cheap like 5-15 euros. I've bought various memory cards, a bunch of controllers and not to forget the console itself. Now that's a lot of money. I bought most of them myself, unlike the PC I shared games with my brother/father.
Now that's the main reason I h4xx0red my Wii. It's just TOO expensive compared to the games I buy on my PC (I built my PC a while ago, 700 euros or so and yet nowadays I can still play all games I got on maximum graphics). And as if stands now I will continue to be able to do so for the forseeable future. And if I can't, I only really have to get a better graphics card.
That's probably the same reason as other people.

Wow, I never knew you had such a good taste in games...still play Starcraft?
I'll admit I've downloaded 2 games in the past, but they were both several years ago before I changed my philosophy. They were from lack of money, but I've reached the conclusion that that is no excuse. Some people happen to be in a better financial situation than others, so good for them, they get games and I don't. It's how a capitalist society works (don't get me started on capitalism).
I don't have any consoles (besides an Nintendto 64) so I don't have to worry about the cost of console games, I simply have to worry about the cost of PC games, and believe me, I get a lot. Over the 14 years I've been gaming I've bought 102 games. Right now I'm tracking 26 games that are all coming out within the next 2 years I might get. Chances are I'll only get about 25% of those games, but that is still close to $350 in two years.
I mostly get components for holidays as presents, however I have bought a graphics card and some cooling for my computer in the past.
My point is, I make do with my extremely low budget and still manage to not download games, I guess I can't see why others have to download.

Re: Warez
I downloaded some games in past, but as a matter of fact I don't really play them. All games I played through I have as a legal copy in my shelter. Cod, Mohaa, Dungeon Siege, GTA Series, Command and Conquer - Generals+Zero hour, WC3, CS1.6, HL2, HL2EP1, HL, HL Extentions, DoDS, HLS, Worms and 2 NfS series. I just can't be bothered with new games - only thing I play at the moment is cod2. I am more in other things on PC
The problem is the games I downloaded would've never buying anyways.

Re: Warez
I've never personnally downloaded any game.
But I do somehow understand that some people might like to try games before buying them.
That's why I believe consoles might be better for pc, in terms of gaming, as you can rent games, before buying them.
You're however able to download demos on pc, I therefore see no excuse to download games.
I do however understand that some software which you'll use 1 time a month, which costs 600$ or so, are perhaps a bit too expansive, and companies should consider that if they'd want to make more profit.
Anyway tbh, if I'd have a gaming company, I wouldn't make any pc games, or I would make some stuff which you'd have to pay for monthly.

Re: Warez
Any game that will not hold my attention for more than a day, or any game I consider a trial run I will not buy.
Fable, Ghostbusters, Warcraft 3, Burnout, NFS, Drakensang, Call of Juarez 2, SWKOR2, Mirrors Edge.
Those are to name the ones I currently have... without purchase. I have not completed any of them past a few hours MAX.
CoD Series, BF2, Far Cry 2, Mercenaries 2, The Last Remnant, WoW, Spore, Black and White 2, TF2, Monkey Island (new), Prototype plus several uninstalled games, all paid for.
I do not lie, money is not an issue. I have enough to buy those games (and no I am not rich) but I refuse to pay for games that I almost guarantee wont be worth it.

Couldn't agree more - that was one of the ones I downloadedDrofder2004 wrote:Fable

It's a reasonable game and all, but definately not value for money and I definately wouldn't have bought it had a download not been available.

Exactly. Infact it was because I downloaded the original Fable that I actually had interest in buying the new one... shame they released as console onlyPedsdude wrote:It's a reasonable game and all, but definately not value for money and I definately wouldn't have bought it had a download not been available.Drofder2004 wrote:Fable

Haha, exactly the same opinion again. The original game did get my interest in terms of buying the next one (paying for one game and playing 2 games by the same company would seem reasonable to me), but as you say they made it console only and as a result I didn't buy it.Drofder2004 wrote:Exactly. Re: Warez
Ok, I may as well jump in and provide my opinion. Keep in mind all the prices I talk about are from the ebgames store here in Australia, a new release pc game is $90, most of the time, whereas a new release Xbox360 game is $100+, highest I saw was $120 which was GTA, so I will talk about pc games, because that's what I primarily use, I have only a few choices when buying a new pc game, I can go to eb and buy it full retail price ($90+), buy it second hand off Ebay or equivalent (if the game RRP is $90, lets say off ebay its $60-70, a lot more if its release week), or pirate the game ($0), now I personally have a few companies I like to support, Valve, IW, and Blizzard, I have no problem paying $60 for CSS, because I love Valve, and I know I will get a lot of fun out of the game because its a MP game, same with CoD and WoW, though WoW is different because of the pay to play model, but for a game like Call of Juarez which I finished in under 5 hours, and didn't enjoy it all that much, I have a HUGE problem paying $80 for that, why should I pay that much for a game that is IMO not even worth $50. Another thing is, I am 14 and can't legally get a paying job, so for me too get $50 I have to either wait until my birthday, or do a shitload of work around the house, my dad doesn't have a problem buying me one or two games under $70, so I use Steam a lot, but look at it from my point of view, I have barely any money, and games cost lots of money, so I pirate a lot of my games, now before you go crazy telling me I'm ruining the PC games industry, hear me out, as I said before, I like to support Valve, IW etc, and those are the games I play the most, I played Call of Juarez for <5 hours, I've played CoD4 for 180 hours, I've played Prototype for 3 hours, I pirated Prototype, and I paid for CoD4.
You might not agree with me, but I really do try to support good pc developers, and I spend hundreds of hours on the games I pay for, and <10 hours on the games I pirate, which I normally uninstall. What do you guys think, have I justified my actions?

Re: Warez
I have only downloaded a few games which i properly played. My #1 was probably silk road. (yes sad but i was addicted
) #2 was warrock (yes also sad but pretty fun) abd #3 crossfire. (i didnt realy play much though). I also downloaded Counter Strike Source (baught) and team fortress 2 (baught).

Re: Warez
Yea, I've heard that Australian prices are ridiculous. Unfortunately, while I do sympathize with your position JDogg you are still part of the stereotype that is bringing PC down. Honestly, as long as you support the developers that deserve it I have no problem with you pirating games from companies like EA.
My problem is not with people that pirate games to see if they are worth buying (essentially using the download as a demo) when they don't have much money. My problem is with the majority of downloaders that never spend money on a game. Ever.

I think never paying for games period is wrong, you have to support the good developers or they wont bother with pc anymore, sometimes I might download a game, and have loads of fun with it, the game is great, but I still don't want to spend full price, if I could donate money straight to the developer and cut out the middle man, I would do that.Soviet wrote:Yea, I've heard that Australian prices are ridiculous. I made that mistake with the original Xbox, I had way too many games, and finished none of them, I don't even want to go back and find out how much money I spent on games, because I know it's a lotKillerSam wrote:I am not a fan of having 9999 games to play, I find that generally you never get the best out of any of them.
I buy about 4-5 games a year I would estimate, and generally I feel I get good value out of the games I do buy:

I try demos and read reviews e.t.c before buying games in most cases. If I like a game and feel I need a new game, then I will buy it if I think it is worth the money, if I don't think it is, I will wait until the price drops (surprisingly quick for some titles) then pick it up when it is £10 or something and give it a try. I don't have unlimited funds and have never downloaded a game illegally (that I can recall, fairly sure I never have) and I still play the games that I want to play, legally.

Re: Warez
Holy shit the prices in Australia are insane...
New games here in Holland are all between 50-60 euros. That's around 70 Dollars or so ? Not entirely sure. Anyway, for your price I can buy 2 or sometimes even 3 games. Insane...
Here for giggles, the games I have...
GC:
Super Mario Sunshine, Super Smash Brothers Melee, Luigi's Mansion, Mario Kart Double Dash, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, Mario Football, Paper Mario, Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2 & 3, Resident Evil Remake, Resident Evil 0, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 Nemesis, Resident Evil Code Veronica X, Resident Evil 4, Pikmin 1 and Pikmin 2, Mario Party 4, 5, 6 & 7, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Adventure Director's Cut, Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Riders, Sonic Mega Collection, Sonic Gems Collection, Reign of Fire, Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2, Zelda the Windwaker, Zelda Ocarina of Time (And Masterquest), Zelda 4 Swords Adventure, Medal of Honor Frontline, Medal of Honor Rising Sun, F-Zero GX, Gameboy Player (Let's me play Gameboy games on the Gamecube), Pokemon Colosseum, Pokemon XD, Eternal Darkness, Kirby's Air Ride, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, Gotcha Force.
ok that's 46 games
3 extra controllers (So a total of 4)
4 memory cards including the biggest out there
As you can see I like Nintendo and Sega a lot. Shared some games with my sister like some Sonic and Pokemon games (I gotta admit, the second pokemon game was really fun, it's different than on the gameboy versions).
The games which occupied me the longest are mostly the Mario Games, Metroid Prime, Zelda and F-Zero GX (One of the best and most awesome racing games I ever played, also the difficulty of that game is FUCKING insane, hardest game the Gamecube has to offer by far).
Now my Wii:
Wii Sports, Zelda Twilight Princess, Mario Party 8, Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition (Yeh, same game, but man, the Wii controlls with the Remote and Nunchuck is awesome!), Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles, Mario Strikers Football, Sonic and the Secret Rings, Super Paper Mario, Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart Wii, Sonic Riders Zero Gravity, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, Donkey Kong Jet Race, Pokemon Battle Revolution, Sonic Unleashed, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, Sonic and the Black Knight, Link's Crossbow Training. And probably over 100 euros spent on downloadable games for the Wii (Legal downloads might I add).
Now, all my GC games are legal, and for my Wii I got 3 illegal games, the last 3 I mentioned (Apart of Link's Crossbow Training, that one is legal). Now both Sonic games would've been worth buying tbh. But games like Pokemon, Donkey Kong, Sonic and the Secret Rings (Its controlls sucked massively, the game had more bugs than CoD5
, but this game came with the release of the Wii), Mario Football (The difficulty of beating this game is way too hard because your friendly NPCs are dumb like hell and the opposing team NPCs are brutal in difficulty and flawless to beat) and I personally hate Wii Sports (Never played it, meh, it sucks).
There hasn't been that many good Wii titles yet sadly. But most other games I have were really worth buying.
I'm looking forward of buying the new Resident Evil (Should already be out I think), new Metroid coming out next year, Mario Galaxy 2 later this year and I think that's pretty much it...
