PC Component Suggestions

Post by WorldDomoNation » May 24th, 2009, 6:27 am

As much as I hate to do this, I'm gunna do it anyway :P Yes that's right, i'm going to ask noob questions about which components I should buy...

So, here's what I've got lined up atm:

-GPU: GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP

-CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Wolfdale 3.16GHz LGA 775 65W

-CPU Cooler: ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro 92mm CPU cooler

-Case: Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower

-PSU: Antec EA650 650W Continuous Power ATX12V Ver.2.2 / EPS12V version 2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply

-Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-G31M-ES2L LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

What do you guys think? Anything you would recommend? I'm also definitely going with 32-bit Vista, not 64.
that's a nice pic and all, but out of all the pictures you could have taken why'd you take a picture of a plant? :P

Because plants have some really small details. If a plant comes out nice in a photo, you have yourself a good camera ;)

Yes, but if boobs come out really well in a photo you have a picture of boobs

Otherwise, pretty well balanced set up tbh.
Definetely.

A Q6600 is only about $30 more than the E8500 that you are getting, so it's not too much more + it will last longer and you can OC it a lot higher.

besides that, I think your good to go unless you want to get a better video card such as a 260 gtx for about $154 (with rebate): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130370

If you can spend a little more on video card, go for a 260gtx instead of the 9800. The higher technology will last much longer in the long run. I've been researching gtx's very constantly so believe me when I say this is the best one on newegg (and probably the best one out there).

Precisely. If you can spare the $50 more you can guarantee your card will last about a year longer.

Thanks for the replies guys! My budget is ~$1000 (USD), and I'm already very close to that because I also have to get a monitor and I want to get a nice logitech G5 mouse.

I was actually looking at the 260gtx, and I think I might go with it instead now. The only problem is, the 9800 was going to cost me $115, and the 260 is going to cost me $170. This is what i had for the 9800: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130339

As for the Q6600, I thought dual core was the way to go atm? Plus, wouldn't it be better to have 3.16 GHz dual core than 2.4 quad core? That way, the programs/games that only use 2 cores (most of them atm), will perform better? With my original set-up that I posted, I was getting the processor and the fan for $204. If I were to upgrade to the Q6600, it would cost me $220 for the CPU alone, and they don't even have any in stock :|

If I could choose one to upgrade, do you think I should upgrade the graphics card or the processor?

So,
E8500 to Q6600
or
9800 gtx to 260 gtx

I just don't think my budget can hold up if I upgrade both. Thanks again guys for the suggestions and tolerating my noob questions :P

I think I'm going to have to agree with KS on this one. Both of those upgrades are very essential for the longevity of your computer.

yeah it does make sense... i think i'm gunna just upgrade both and wait on the monitor and mouse, since i have extra mice laying around and a monitor (not a hi-res monitor but it will do as a temporary solution). But i'm gunna have to get the processor elsewhere, there sold out on newegg
