Well, the mystery continues. I've turned my PC on this morning and everything's perfectly fine (I daren't run anything graphics card sapping though!)

Have you checked your gfx card fans are on (especially during fullscreens)?

Fan*. Yes, it's on (rather annoyingly, because it's quite high pitched - has been for ages and is partly why I want a new one.)

If it is spinning rapidly while doing nothing, its not exactly going to be able to cool a game running.

Have you cleaned and made sure there is space for the card to 'breath' (space infront of fans).

I've cleaned in and around the graphics card.

On the note of space, my network adapter / ADSL section is pretty close to my graphics card in my computer case, although it's as far away as can be with them still in there. I have my graphics card there (with the fan pointing downwards), and then roughly 1.5 inches below it is my network adapter, which is the same size as my graphics card, so I would imagine that's not too good for my heating (although I'm not sure if there's any other way of arranging my PC).

Turns out what I thought was a network adapter is actually an unused sound card

I've taken it out since (but drawn where it was). Now there's much more room for the graphics card to 'breathe', so to speak, is this likely to help much?

It will help but not solve it.
Leave a temp monitor running and run a game for 5 minutes and see what it raises to.

The graphics card in my laptop can easily reach 90-95C at load, above that it downclocks rather annoyingly, especially if the room is warm. So I'm not sure this is a overheating issue.

What I believe is that some component of the graphics card, quite possibly a capacitor, has failed or is not working correctly with a high current. When load increases, current increases, problem in capacitor with supplying power = fail. The easiest and most attractive solution, like I said before, upgrade to a GTX 275

Aha, thank you.

To confirm,

It seems my graphics card is fully done for. I turned my PC on this morning and everything was running fine, the temp of the card was 47 degrees celsius, and then I loaded a CoD4 map and my computer froze (almost as soon as the map loaded). Since then it's been bad all day and I've had to run it in safe mode. Ordering a GTX 275 later tonight and hopefully it'll come on Monday/Tuesday!

I suspect that permanent damage has been done and so it can only handle a small amount of graphics. It's perhaps only a small amount of time before it decides to pack in completely.

Indeed, mine runs at core 52 and goes up to the 70's gaming (although 90+ is a little extreme I would imagine O_O)

I am quite a fan of my nice blue glow lol. (no pun intended!)

This topic could easily turn into a "post your desktop", but it could easily turn into anything I guess on there forums.
Well, this topic is now in critical stages. The content has been exhausted the problem has not been solved but an alternate solution has been found and this topic is now free.

Posting desktop? Nah. Just imagine a dual display, and an Antec900 on the floor. Shitty wooden desk, some broken old speakers used once a month at most and a pad for jotting shit down (ooh, and today it happens to have my remaining wages on it :P)
