Arg, PC is f**ked!

I would VERY much appreciate any help with this!

Basically, a few days ago I was playing CoD4 and my monitor went rather strange with streaks across it for a period of 2ish seconds and then returned to normal. It happened again soon after and then it froze, and I had to restart. I assumed it was my graphics card so I've since taken my graphics card out and cleaned it (sufficiently, I think!), but I'm still getting the issue.

It was the case that I could let my PC 'cool down' as it were (at first I thought it was my graphics card overheating) and when I would turn it back on 5 minutes later it would be OK. Now it seems to be doing it all the time - as soon as I turn my PC on and I see the loading screens etc. they are already distorted. I've installed the latest drivers (I'm pretty sure) and other than that I can't really work out what's causing this.

I was able to read an error earlier today which read "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered", and following a Google around I believe that an driver update would solve it, but it hasn't. That is the effect overheating has, and that car is more than likely, now officially fucked.

Get a enw card and either:
a) A bigger case for mroe air flow
b) Better fans for more cooling
c) Both!

Opening the side of your case to cool your graphics card is a workaround for a major problem and it will never last.

Go get daddy's credit card out!

My processor fan does seem to only run at around 700-800 rpm, although I seem unable to change it and the temperatures are fine.

I've had this setup for ages and had no problems with overheating, so I don't know why it would have done it all of a sudden recently.

and as for an answer, your graphics card probably overheated due to either:
A) bad airflow in your case
B) overclocking your card too far and letting the temps go too high
C) not enough fans/ no cooling.


There are a few more things that could cause your card to overheat, but they aren't worth mentioning. I had this same probably about 3 days before I got my 260 gtx (it was with my 8400 gs) and what happened was that I used to overclock my card and the temps would rise to around 78C while playing cod4 and the temp would rise depending on how long I played cod4, but it would go back down whenever I turned cod4 off. The day before it overheated, I left cod4 on a pub server in spectate for 8 hours and when I came back the screen was frozen with pink bars going across it and it was shot :s. This is a good chance for you to get that 260 gtx that you've been talking about lately :p.

Anyway, back on topic, I've never overclocked a graphics card in my life so it won't be that that's caused it. I also have a number of fans in my case so in that case it's probably an airflow issue.

A friend has recommended buying that (I was going to get the 260 at Christmas for £200 but never got round to it, and prices have fallen since so can afford an upgrade), would anyone else confirm / suggest a better card for not much more than £200?

Also, it mentions custom cooling in that link with that card, would I need to resolve my current 'issue' or was it just a case of my 'current' graphics card being somewhat outdated?

A graphics card cannot cool itself nowadays. Consider your cooling option first.

my problem was that my pc put my videocard fan only @ 25% and through a program called rivatuner i was able to put it @ 100% , so nowadays my vidcard only gets like 60 degrees instead of the 90+ it used to.
