Perfect Shadows

Hello,
When I create crates, 2 sides are light, and the other 2 sides are almost black...too much shadow...
To Fix that I always put some lights near it....
(This sounds nooby)
This is my question: Is there an easy way to make perfect shadows? or is it just adding lights untill the shadow is looking perfect?
I hope there is an easy way to do that....
