Grid Sizes

Whenever I use like 8 grid or 16 grid, its like it is still on one grid. I mean it doesnt stay on the 8 grid lines. Any ideas?

On the toolbar there is a "align to grid" button. It is a small button with 2 L shapes. 1 is red and 1 is blue.
I will try get a screenshot.
