I was wondering about this, I want to create a render which cuts out a ship from Freelancer for example like this:

Now, if anyone could help me out with this it would make me very happy. D:

If I got you right you want to cut out one of those ships in the image you provided?
With photoshop just use the magic tool and click on the white space delete it - take marquee tool and copy your desired ship without the background.
Another way would be to use paths and create a shape of the ship you want to have so you can save an selection and easy modify it via the path tools provided along with ps

actually almost every photo you will see in any magazine or on the internet has been reworked in a graphics tool. And industry standard is photoshop! You can use gimp to ^^
