The way I look at it, we are seeing throught the eyes of the media, and from personal accoutns by his "friends". Although we should not judge a book by its cover, a murderer is a murderer, whether or not he commit his crime while sane or insane.
He should be given one of two sentences...
Locked away in a jail.
Locked away in a unit.

Well now it is just down to moral opinion, of which I don't really have a definitive one. It's a very hazy issue, not something that you can fairly treat as black and white. Unfortunately, given our current level of intelligence and awareness it must be judged as black and white or not at all.

Re: mad MAN in Cumbria Uk
What a pointless discussion.
I keep it simple, that man murdered 12 different people. Who cares if he's stable or unstable ? He not only took away 12 different lives, but he also destroyed their family members with this. Could've been a mother or a father with young kids.
A pity he killed himself, because he deserved to rot in prison.

It's only pointless because you're so narrow minded and focused on society's definitions of right and wrong that you can't look past it all to see the importance of such discussions. That type of attitude is the same type of attitude that causes all the issues with misuse of mental illnesses. No discussion ever intended to raise a person's perception of something is ever pointless unless they have their head so far stuck up their morally superior ass that they can't perceive what the underlying concept means to the preservation of the few good qualities of mankind we possess.
To suggest that psychological analysis is unimportant because it is of no consequence suggests that the why's do not matter, only the what's. If the what's are the only thing that matter, then we'll continue to mentally deprave ourselves of concepts like justice, learning, rational thinking, and advancement which will instead be replaced with the all too common corruption and greed that is the foundation of society.

I'm pretty sure I came up with the best Derrick Bird joke this week.
I told it to Derrick Bird on Tuesday.
