Also I believe it's because your eyes are focused in the middle, but they still see both sides and your brain merges both pictures into one face.

Its peripheral vision (or tunnel vision). While focusing on a central point the eyes cannot give you enough information beyond the structure of the object. The brain knows it is a face so it fills in the detail to the best of your ability, with the image changing rapidly, you brain is being forced to make up the image using previous images... creating this incredibly fucked up caricature vision...

And that is the most unscientific way I can explain it and how I understand it.
