the church jump on arhnem is about 280x-30 units... from a mappers perspective but because of the small runup spritning its the only way to do this jump :p

Hi WoCoom

Are we talking about the same jump? I can do the small sprint jump onto the church roof from the graveyard. However, in one of the Gromgutten demos, he shows a jump from the church roof across the street towards the Allied spawn! On the demo, he definitely strafes across (although he may also be sprinting).

That jump is WAY to far to normal strafe. Like Wocoom said, 280 units, few jumpers can make 250. Church accross to the ruined wall, is a big spint-strafe jump, and can be quite hard with low fps (that spot halves fps)

I made a demo long time ago, to help out a guy with that jump. You can see it here: http://www.home.no/bakmar/Filer/arnhemjump.dm_3

Like other people says, I think the gap is around 280 units (Im using sprint of course).

So, take a look at the demo, maybe it makes it easier for you to see where to jump from. Good luck !

Great skills, Gromgutten! A little beyond my powers at the moment!

However, I have made some pretty good progress on the smaller strafe jumps. I can now jump the first gap on Peds Practice! That's it, though! Which brings me back to the original question - What is it that allows Destiny to hop between these jumps like a turbo-charged Kangaroo, whereas I am stuck just beyond the starting line? What do you chaps aim to do when performing a really large strafe jump - do you want to flick the mouse back the greatest distance possible? Do you want to get as close as possible to pressing the strafe key, jump and mouse at the same time? I can finally strafe jump but have no idea how to improve (or, more precisely, exactly what I am trying to do to improve).

As always, your tips and guidance would be greatly appreciated.

333fps tbh :P j/k, Destiny is a very accomplished jumper. What fps you got Rentokil? make sure you're getting a stable 125, otherwise you might not get much further than the first jump. There is more than one way you can "hop between these jumps like a turbo-charged Kangaroo" its technique, which will come with lots of practice there's no shortcuts or quick way of getting good at it, i'm always being asked like, what makes you jump further? even tho they can already strafe pretty good. its difficult to put your finger on it, but its basically a variation from a simple technique, and you just sort of tweak it. The speed and direction you flick the mouse is very important, and if you time it right in combination of using the strafe keys it will give you an extra boost.
If you send a demo we could look at ways to improve your technique, but it sounds like you're making progress so thats good.

Thanks, Luke

I set my fps to 125 and it's constant. I can get 333 but there is definitely some volatility. I may try that.

Funny you should mention the speed and direction of the mouse. After hours and hours of practice, I found that I was flicking the mouse more upwards than either left or right. I am far more consistent now that I concentrate on flicking it left or right only i.e. I try not to flick up or down at all! Not sure if this is entirely necessary but it has certainly helped me to start out. You other noobs out there may want to try that out.

Thanks for the offer to review my technique - I shall try and put together a short demo - although you may have to wait through several failed attempts before you get to see the real thing - so stick the kettle on before you watch! Still, I guess its the unsuccessful jumps that will give you the best idea of where I am going wrong. Hope to have something with you soon.

Cheers

for that demo i used 125fps, cos with 333fps u have 2 strafe jump a bit differently to go as far as 125. as for flicking the mouse, its fine if u just use horizontal movement as in quake 3 if uve ever seen strafe jumping in that. but i usually look down so i can see where im going to be jumping from since for the longer jumps you really need to jump from the edge of platforms. just use whatever works for u :D

The demo won't load because of a mod you must have installed which I don't have. Would be better if the demo was done in CoD rather than UO too.

Sorry, Luke

I am not sure how you actually turn the Mods off - there does not appear to be any way of doing that from the main menu. However, I have repeated the exercise with CoD and the only Mods showing in the folder were CoD Multiplayer and UO - both of which I assume are there from the moment you install.

If this file does not work, then I may have to reinstall to clean out my folders.

Thanks again
