I think the boat sailed a long time ago.
With the impending doom of bitcoin, I doubt any new cryptocurrency will gain enough weight to put significant resources into.

If you had joined the bitcoin mining in the early stages, you would be in for at least some good return, however I do not see any new currency ever gaining the momentum bitcoin did and if bitcoin does completed collapse, the future of all others will be shady.

If you have the resources to do it and the patience to see if it pays off, then there is no reason not to.
