How to Add Custom Textures To Your Maps - Basic! No .DDS!

Post by DudeDewDaa » November 3rd, 2012, 1:50 pm

Wanna add your own textures in CoDRadiant, even without bothering making .dds fles and using the asset_manager?

Then this tutorial is for you, it's a tutorial about just that, adding your own textures into your maps!

This is my first tutorial, and my first topic, but im gonna try to explain as good as i can ;D

You will need:
1. A photo editing program(I use Paint.NET)

2. CoDRadiant

3. A PC

4. And a Texture

Step 1. Creating Your Texture / Image

Create a new File, and make the Canvas Size 512x512

Remember to uncheck "Maintain Aspect Ratio" !

Image

Step 2. Saving our Texture

Now that we have our 512 x 512 sized image, we have to save it, of course.

Click "File" - "Save As" and choose JPEG from the list.

Now this is good to know!

If you save your image, maybe like "My Texture.jpeg", it wont have ANY sound in your map.

Not when you walk on it, or use it as a ladder.

To fix this, simply add theese in front of the name:

metal@
wood@
concrete@
cloth@
glass@

Thats the ones i know, im sure its more than that...

Example:

"wood@MyTexture.JPG"

Basically what it does, it's ad sounds to the tetxures, like if you add "wood@", it sounds like you're walking on planks, wood,
and all that stuff, and "glass@", makes the sound of glass.

Make sure that you saveit as a .JPEG!

And if you're using transparent textures, like glass, save it as a .tga file, and add: "glass_blend_in@MyTexture"

for transparent textures.

Step 3. Adding the textures to CoD Radiant

To add your texture into Radiant, go into your CoD main directory, and add a new Folder Called "Textures"
Image
Then, in the "Textures" folder, add a new folder named whatever you want, like "My Textures".
Image

Then, copy and paste your texture in there^^

Image

Now, to find your texture, simply go into your Radiant, and go to textures, and your folder should be there!

(*Note: I putted the texture in my original texture folder named "Minecraft, where i have all the other textures to my soon released map, which only uses custom textures*)

And as you can see, heres our texture!

In editor window:

Looks nice, but we're not finished yet!

Step 5. Make our textures visible in map

If you would play your map now, you would see that your texture is a gray black outlined box, and not the etxture that you drew at all.

To fix this, open your .pk3 file, with your .bsp and all that, and add a new folder in there called "textures".

Then, Drag your custom textures map, in to the .pk3 texture map.

And here's our texture, in the .pk3 map! :D

And we are finsihed, your texture will now work in game, and you can add as many as you want! ;)

I hope this tutorial was helpful, but like i said before, it's my first one, well, the first WRITTEN tutorial^^

A fairly neat tutorial, although a little dated.

There are mapping tutorial forums, which this will be mvoed to. Cheers :)
(Didn't realise you had already posted in Tutorials - will delete duplicate).
