How to reduce map filesize from ~20MB to ~5MB

Post by Pedsdude » January 3rd, 2011, 6:46 pm

Here's a quick and easy way to reduce your map size considerably, with seemingly NO effect on the map itself. KillerSam and I discovered it by complete fluke.

---

1. Open up the CoD4 Compile Tools program.

2. Click "4. Update Zone File"

3. Remove the following lines from your zone file:

Code: Select all

sound,common,mp_digital,!all_mp
sound,generic,mp_digital,!all_mp
sound,voiceovers,mp_digital,!all_mp
sound,multiplayer,mp_digital,!all_mp
(obviously it'll say your map name instead of mp_digital)

---

That's it, you should be done! When you compile, your .ff file will be considerably smaller, and from testing it a reasonable amount I haven't noticed ANY changes at all to the map or in-game sounds. I never added any custom sounds in mp_digital, so if you've got sound files in your map then perhaps it will mess things up, but otherwise I would imagine it's fine.

I told the same thing to Sohvax when he made mp_meh and the map seems to run perfectly fine with the reduced filesize.

Good luck, and enjoy shorter download times!

Lathough you have proven it to work, I just fail to believe it was never noticed before, which leads me to wonder if their are any potential problems.

But, currently no problems are evident and therefore I suggest it is used.

Indeed, there have been no reported problems with mp_digital or mp_meh, and they've been played reasonably extensively on #1.

Looks like it could stop the battlechatter effect (if you've only tested it ont he CJ jump mod) when playing relatively unmodded mods, personally battlechatter annoys me anyway though, so nice find.

One thing I found when fixing backlot, was vehicles make less noise(almost no noise) without "sound,common,mp_test,!all_mp"

So maybe the others are used for something.

Do you mean noise when you stand on them / hit them with bullets+nades / blow them up?

Not sure about standing on them, but when they light on fire and blow up you can't hear the fire or explosion.
