What Determines How Far You Jump?
Greetings y'all!
I am a newcomer to the art of CoD Jumping but keen to improve.
So far I have downloaded (amongst other things) the strafejumping tutorials by Destiny and Ped both excellent but appear to be different techniques. I can make the jump on the railyard map almost all the time and thought that I must be a pretty accomplished jumper - no chance! I then downloaded Peds_practice map and could not even make the first jump - I was miles short!
So, I had another look at Peds_tutorial and the jump btw the two boxes in the training yard. I have tried things out for several hours but my successes are pretty random. I re-read the Destiny tutorial and it talked of running in an arc (something you had not mentioned, Ped - do you not run in an arc for your method?) - my success rate has definitely improved and I seem to be travelling that little further). I still need a lot of practice, though.
So, after that rather long intro, my question to all you experts out there is, 'What actually governs how far you jump?'. Does the size of the arc have anything to do with it? Is it simply perfect timing btw all the steps involved?
Looking forward to your tips/explanations.
By the way, given that cod-jumping relies on a quirk with the Q3 engine, do you know that strafe-jumping will actually be possible with CoD2 given that they have gone and developed their own engine this time round? I certainly hope so.

Welcome to CJ, imperssive first post, barely ever see someone "introduce" themselves. ;D
Anyways, on to the question...
The distance you jump is determinded by A LOT of different things, these are the ones I can list...
-Speed (Player Movement)
-Speed (Mouse Movement - flick both vertical and horizontal)
-FPS (125/333)
The running arc, may have something to do with it, but it think the arc works on the strafe. In other words, as long as you hold strafe the size of the arc is not relevant (although, the larger the arc, the more flick you can use... feck knows tbh
)
Peds_Practice is not actually a practice map at all, you should try the ones with multiple difficulties (railyard_jump_easy/hard) or try one with a range of different jumps (mp_jump).
My advice is the same as everyone elses, practice, but dont try and jump the gun (peds_practice....
)
As for CoD2, from what we noticed in teh demo, strafe jumping does work. Although IW said they rebuilt the engine from scratch they did use a base. The base was Quake3. Several Jumps were found in the demo, but I have a feeling the demo was made seperately and with a lot less work (they didnt use hardly any clips), but what we are hearing from our American friends (scum, until 4th Nov) is that it is looking hard. Only time will tell
Keep your posts coming, always welcome!

Guys, thanks for the warm welcome and the info.
I will do as you say and work my way up - mp_jump seems a good one and (with a lot of restarts) I can make my way round a fair proportion of the jumps - some are still beyond me!
However, before I return to my basic jump training, can you chaps confirm that you can in fact make the jumps in Peds_practice (go on, give me some inspiration!). Are they sprinting strafe jumps? If anyone could supply a demo I would be very interested in a look - to me, even the first one looks bloody impossible! Can anyone actually make it all the way?
In the meantime, I will content myself with some of the lesser jumps and work up from there.
Cheers

I dont have time to practice tbh, I only do jump maps for fun, thats why maps that are created badly or have no eral fun in them I get bored. I am pretty sure I can jump 150 but thats only on a good day, which hasnt been for a while. (I have completed son-of-bitch, that has a 150 jump, so i must be able toGromgutten wrote:148 is kinda sucky, or what Drofder ?![]()
I have completed the map once, but it's hard!
Btw, welcome Rentokil!

A normal jump (no strafe) is around 200 isnt it?

De$t!ny, thanks for the demo - truly amazing and, from what I can tell, not a sprint in sight! Sheeit, man I got a lot of practicing to do!
Hello also, Gromgutten, I recognise your name from some of the demos, particularly the Arnhem roof jumps - very impressive- blasted show-off
! In terms of distance what would you say the leap from the church in Arnhem across the street is?
Anyway, thanks all. Will view a few more demos then start improving.
