codSURF

Post by IzNoGoD » December 5th, 2012, 9:25 pm

Hey all,

With the help of kung foo man, who modified the linux server binaries to support multiple additional functions, I was able to implement surfing in call of duty 2.

Enough talk, lets see some vids:

Watch them. Or dont. I dont care :)

The script should be made compatible without much issues. The underlying code (modified server binaries) are more work. I cannot do that.

You have to find someone who can and who is willing to do it.

Well played. Unfortunately, like the defrag mod which I had great fun playing with, CoD2 + mapping requirements means this will not last long or go far. Which is a shame, because surf can be quite fun.

How well does the air-strafe work?
Does the guy who did the binaries not deal with CoD4?

Im willing to share the source code with everybody, but the guy that modified the binaries invested a shitload of time into it, so im pretty sure he wants to keep those private.

Might be (as he is trying to make some money by hosting servers) that he is willing to port it to cod4 though...

Atm its only for cod2, and only for v1.2 (1.3 is newest...)

Sadly modding for games at this age is not a monetary option, I respect his hard work, but I would not be willing to part with cash for it. I can live with or without it.

With a limited market of CoD2 gamers and even fewer of those gamers being 'CoDJumper' sorts, his target audience is no more than a single servers worth of people, even with CoD4, his audience would struggle to hit a 500 unique players, there are Free2Play games with surfing and an established array of maps to choose from, this currently has (from videos alone) a single map made from case textures.

If this was made 3-5 years ago, it may have been a valid idea to market.

Update on this matter.

Kung has decided to port a lot of these awesome features to cod4.

Mysql and velocity-related functions are already fully working, which should allow modders to save/load statistics from a mysql-database.

If anyone is interested in trying out these new servers/features, you can add kung foo man on xfire:

(yes, that really is his xfire...)

I'm glad he has decided to do it, but I don't have time (or any form of skill level in this area anymore) to jump in for test.
Let me know when a open beta or some sort of public release and if its good, will happily publicise.

[DOWNLOAD] [CoD2] Surf-Mod

Post by kung foo man » August 24th, 2013, 7:08 pm

Surf-Mod for CoD2, should be easily convertible to CoD4:

Thanks and credits:
- IzNoGod for initial surf-algorithm
- Peterlankton for converting items and textures of Team Fortress 2 to CoD2

Dependency for player setVelocity(vec):
- Server-Extension for Linux CoD2 1.2 / 1.3 and CoD4 1.7 Source/Binaries (google it)

Maps can be converted from Team Fortress 2 with the VMF2Map-Converter:
- VMF2MAP (google it)

License (IzNoGod's default one):

Code: Select all

 - you may use this script, cannot sell it, you may modify it, but if someone asks for it, you have to give it for free
 - no claims if any damage by script
 - you have to give modified versions for free
Have fun!

I can't help but think, that this made 6 years ago, would've potentially improved the possibilities of the CoDJumper scene ten times over - and with a lot of dedication, I believe a CoDJumper mod made in such an advanced way would still today, be receiving plenty of traffic.

--
If it is not too much to ask:
1. Any chance of a very brief "How to:" on setting up a server?
2. Can these files be directly modified to add, change or update functions without issue?

I don't think I will ever get time to look at thing to in-depth, but just in case.
---

Thank you [Kung Foo Man], IzNoGod & any one else involved.

Hey, I'm glad about your interest. :)

1)

Download the .so-file for your server: http://killtube.org/downloads/libcod/
Modify the start-script: LD_PRELOAD=libcod2_1_3_nomysql.so ./cod2_lnxded +set fs_game surf
Download the surf mod attachment in my last post and upload it to your server, name the directory "surf"
Download some maps: http://killtube.org/fastdownload/surf/main/

2) Yea, the source code is fully open source: https://github.com/kungfooman/libcod

If you need help, just ask me on xfire (123123231) and I can install it for you via TeamViewer (so I also learn about the differences in all the linux distributions and can make libcod more portable). Install might take max 10 minutes.
