RPG = Role Playing Game
An RPG is a game where you take on the role of a character, you choose what their option are.
RPG has nothing to do with empathising with the characters.

In ME2 you choose your players dialog, so it is an RPG.
Its not exactly Final Fantasy or Zelda, but a genre is not defined by the games in it.

Nice pic of Diablo, but Diablo is more hack 'n slash

Real RPGs are Oblivion, Fallout and even games like Pokemon and Paper Mario.
