Mapping

|
THIS PAGE APPLIES TO CoD1 ONLY!
You can find many mapping tutorials on our forums -
http://www.codjumper.com/forums
A lot of people have asked me (and continue to ask me) questions about mapping, such as "How do I create a CoD map?". Well to hopefully
answer everyone's questions I have created this page.
To begin mapping, you first need the CoDRadiant program. Download the file from here:
http://callofduty.filefront.com/file/COD_Radiant;22354#Download
Once it has downloaded, extract the .zip file, and read this page:
http://www.modsonline.com/Tutorials-read-139.html
From then on in, you're on your own! You may find the modsonline site very useful for mapping tutorials which explain how to map, and the certain
techniques involved in mapping.
I suggest you add this page to your favourites, as it will come in very handy when you try to learn to map (and in fact when you want to learn to do
something different):
http://www.modsonline.com/Tutorials-list-4.html
If you are new to mapping, which I assume you are, you should read these tutorials (preferrably in this order):

When you have mastered the technique of mapping, you will want to actually play your map. This is where compiling comes in. Download this file
first of all, which is very useful for compiling:
http://www.codjumper.com/files/CoDUOMaker.zip Unzip it, and then run the exe. If it does not ask
for you to find your particular directories, click on Properties and make sure they are all correct (otherwise the compiler will not work properly).
When you want to test your map, you should save it, making sure it is saved in the main\maps directory, then run the CoDUOMaker.exe program. If
all has gone well it should appear in the list on the left. Select it, click Build (making sure MP map is selected) and then click Start. A DOS-type
window will open, this is the actual compiling taking place. Once it is done it will close the DOS-type window, and it will say it is done. You should
then find some new files in your main\maps directory. If you named your map "jump.map", then "jump.bsp" should have been created (if the compile
was successful). The main file you need for your map to work is the .bsp file - if that does not exist then you cannot play
your map!
Go to your desktop (it doesn't really matter where you do this, but I find desktop is easiest) and create a folder with the name of your map. In this case,
I would go to desktop and create a folder called "jump". Inside that "jump" folder, create another folder called "maps". Inside that "maps" folder
create another folder called "mp". Inside that "mp" folder you should place your .bsp map and any scripting you may have (if you know how to do scripting
then you probably already know how to play your map, so I won't explain about them). Do not put "jump.map" or "jump.bak" in this folder
otherwise people will be able to edit your map (unless you don't mind, in which case go ahead). The main file you need is the .bsp file, without this your map
will not run!. When you have done this, go back so you can see the "maps" folder (but you are not in it - you are in the "jump" folder), and zip it up. When you zip it,
do what you
would normally do to create a zip file, except rename it to "jump.pk3". Place this file in your "Call of Duty\main" folder, load CoD, and type "/map
jump". It should then successfully load your map!
If you have no settings where you can make it a .pk3, I suggest you download a file called 7zip or WinZip, which create .zip files, but you can change
the filename when you do it.
I hope this tutorial has been useful to you. If you have compiling errors then have a search on google or post on our forums and I am sure
very experienced mappers will be able to solve the problem for you. When you create your map, make sure you put a spawn point in, otherwise you
cannot play the map! I also suggest you create an intermission, as sometimes the compiler doesn't let you compile the map if you don't have one.
As personal preference, I always create DM and TDM spawns, so people can run my map in either gametype, which is quite handy.
That's all for now. I will update this page whenever something comes to my attention or needs adding specifically.
