The Orange Box

Post by [SoE]_Zaitsev » April 28th, 2009, 4:00 pm

Got it this weekend.

Finished Portal already. When playing that I wonder how much work has been put in creating that. Must've been extremely hard.

Playing HL2 again, finishing the main game before I move on to the other chapters.

Team Fortress 2 I'll be probably playing that with some friends, get familiar with how it works etc. Seems like fun.

Anything important I need to know about TF2 ? What class do I start with ?

KS obviously has no taste for good games :P

With TF2, start playing on the map cp_dustbowl or ctf_2fort. I'd suggest starting with a simple class like sniper, pyro, soldier, scout, or heavy where not many people are depending on you doing specific or complex things and working your way to more essential classes that need to be doing specific things like medic, spy, engineer, or demoman.

I've played shit loads of ctf_2fort, my favorite map :D, my best class is Scout, and I unlocked all the new upgrades.

I would play some maps solo but unlike CoD I can't so I can't explore the maps somehow.

Also, I got no instruction manuel, what kind of gametypes are there ? I played some Arena (Although I quit straight away) which appears to be like Roundbased Match from MoH back in the days. Also quickly played some defend a position gametype but they're all gametypes where I need to wait to spawn. Now that in itself isn't such a big problem but it is when I'm trying to get to know the maps/classes and learn a bit how to play.

Watch the movies that pop up at the beginning of levels, very helpful.

ctf is capture the flag, can only capture when your intel is at home, goes back to home after not being touched for 60 seconds

cp is capture point. One defends, one attacks. The more people standing on the points, the better, once one has been captured it can't be taken back. The actual layout of points depends on map. cp_dustbowl has 3 different play sections with 6 points total. cp_gravelpit has 3 points, you have to capture the first 2 before you can capture the last one.

pl is payload. You have a cart which you have to push (stand next to while it moves) to a number of checkpoints on the railway. There are typically multiple sections to a pl map.

tc isn't very popular. It typically works with a number of different sections and approaches to the map. Depending on who won the last map and where depends on the next section you play. Essentially, if one team wins enough sections in a row they make it to the final blue/red base and if they capture that final point they win.

To play a map solo just click the 'start a new server button' on the main window and make sure it isn't dedicated. Or type map 'mapname' (no ''s) in console.

Your flag does NOT have to be at home to be able to capture the enemy's flag.

ctf is essentially tdm if you play on the right servers. But nothing named tdm, no. Just play 2fort on a 32 man server, no one goes for intel.

That's my weekend project, it will probably turn out like Elephantiasis Scout, but who cares.

I've only leveled up my Scout. Hmmmm, razorback sounds pretty cool for Snipers, but news for Spy's, but the new watch sounds good, not moving keeps you invisible, now it will take 10 minutes to get to the enemies base in 2fort.
