Playing COD 1v1 online

Post by peiper » February 17th, 2005, 11:33 pm

Hi,I'm new to this game. Also I'm a real computer no-hoper when it comes to the tech side of things so please bear with me.
I want to play COD over the internet with my brother ,but we do not always want to play in the normal gaming arenas(we aint good enough...its too disheartening!).
Is there anyway we can do a direct intenet link between us?(I'm guessing that as my machine is faster and I'm on boroadband that I should host it)
I have tried to set up multiplayer game from within COD but whatever we try doesn't work.He tried to connect using All Seeing eye and Gamespy but nothing showed up in their server lists.
Another complication is that my computer is connected to a Linksys wireless router , somebody in a arena mentioned that this could also cause problems , but as his description became moretechnically detailed I couldn't really follow what he was saying(I was also being shot at!).
Anyone have any ideas how we can go 1v1?...or at least where I should ask this question. Thanks in advance.

Funny, I played my brother recently ;)

I'm taking it that you are talking about playing against your brother across a LAN (local area network). To do this you must have 2 computers connected by a router (which sounds like you do).

What you want to do is load CoDMP and go Start New Server. Where it says "Dedicated", you will want to choose "LAN".

Get your brother to go to Join New server, and change the "Source" bit at the top to "Local". If he changes the filters to show the settings of the server you setup, he should be able to find it.

Sorry , I meant to say over the internet and NOT LAN.
We used to do this with Medal of Honor OK , but I cant figure out how to do it in COD.

you can directly Network (WAN) over the internet

if you do this "lookup VNP on google" you can directly connect your pc's for LAN games

When I typed "lookup VNP" into google all I got mainly got was stuff about Virus Notification Programs. There were one or two other links but I didn't really know what I was looking for.Is there anyway you could send me a direct link? (and I know I'm pushing my luck a here ,but , some step by step instructions would really help!).

Why don't you just set up a server as you would normally do, but put a password on it so only you and your brother can join it?

Every attempt I've made at setting up a sever has failed.

Ah.... an internet one when you're on a router :?

You need to open some ports for this, but I'm not exactly sure how. I also have problems setting up servers online when im on a wireless router. I don't know how to do it, but you need to somehow allow the port 28960 to work - maybe someone on the site may know or someone else you know?

Im on a router, and to host a CoD server i have to open the following ports:

20500 on UDP
20510 on UDP
28960 on UDP

I also have to direct those ports to the same port on my computer on the network. So I direct them to 192.168.1.12 (my comps IP on the network).

Good Luck.
