Lan server

Post by red_gee » August 17th, 2006, 3:08 am

In a few weeks I'm going to my friend's school and we are planning to have a lan party in one of the computer labs
I haven't setup a server in this game as yet
But here is the plan

Install my copy of call of duty 2 on several machines, set one up as a dedicated server for the lan, set the options that I want and so fourth
Then start the server

Then on the other machines just go into join game and go to local at the top
The server should come up right?
If not then what should I do?
Do I need to crack the game to run a party like that using just one retail version?
What other things do I need to keep in mind?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I just don't want to run into any problems

Set it to LAN, not dedicated, then it should show up in the LAN Servers bit in Join Game and everything should be running hunky dorey (unless the school has some confusing networking, which it probably does, in which case I can't help much :P).

In theory it should all work fine. It won't all work fine if you all go on an internet game as only one person would be able to do so (due to there being only one CD key), but LAN games are fine with multiple copies of the same game cd key.

Alright, Do you think there would be any sort of benifet to setting one machine up as dedicated host though?
I realize that on a lan lag should be low
But if their computer's aren't perfect (I haven't been to this campus in a year and a half) would using a dedicated hose not smooth things out? Or would it just not work?

If it was dedicated then it wouldn't be LAN, so others wouldn't be able to join (unless they all had seperate cd keys).

Ahh Okay
But I guess to achieve the same thing (Not having somebody playing on the host computer) just have that machine spec the match
I dunno what it is, I just don't like playing as a host, I dunno why though

KillerSam tells me that you can have it set to Dedicated and still have it as a LAN. I don't know how, but I'm sure you can play around with it at the time and see if you can get it working. Still, there's nothing wrong with leaving the PC on spec, or indeed just playing on the PC (although you would have a slight unfair advantage of zero ping compared to others :P).
