[HELP] How to host a WAN dedicated server through your PC?

Post by Mr. Nobody » June 4th, 2014, 11:01 pm

Hello, fellow codjumpers!

Lately, i've been looking into hosting a private codjumping server through my computer so that i can bounce with my friends, but i haven't gotten it to work.
The problem is that they get "awaiting connection..." and then time out.
My server also doesnt show up on the master server list.

I myself can play on it, with a codjumping mod added and with maps that all work.

I have also forwarded port 28960. I don't need to open any other ports, do i?

So this is how i set up the server each time:
1. Run CoD4
2. Choose the codjumping mod
3. Do /g_gametype cj
4. Click "start a new server" and choose the settings i want
5. Start the server, console appears, leave it open
6. Rerun CoD4, find the server under "local" and enter

Now, it works perfectly for me, i can play it as any other codjumper server.
Unfortunately my friends can't join.

I am quite new to hosting and dealing with servers on CoD4, so i have probably overseen a huge thing, but from all my google searches on the topic i can't seem to find where the problem lies.

Do any of you know what i am doing wrong? Am i maybe missing some files?

I've heard about a "server.cfg" file, do i need this for people to be able to join my server?

Any help or answer is immensely appreciated! :)

Yes, you'll need a server config (server.cfg).

If the server is showing up in your 'Local' list when you load up CoD4 MP, then it means it's just a LAN server and not a dedicated, online one, so your friends won't be able to join.

I haven't hosted a CoD4 server in a very long time, but the steps listed in the link below look about right.
http://www.ehow.co.uk/how_6873721_host-cod4-server.html

You'll want to change the server config to suit your server (i.e. your own hostname, map rotation, etc.). Also, I would suggest giving the .cfg file a name that nobody will guess, because an exploit became commonly known a while ago where anyone can download .cfg files from a server if they know the filename, and consequently get the RCON password.

One final note - I went on YouTube to see if I could find a video tutorial for you, but I couldn't find any good ones, and the ones I found seemed to suggest downloading some software, which will likely just be a way of stealing your CD key - so don't do this! You don't need any external software to run a server.

Okay, and the .cfg i make from a notepad file?

Okay, thank you very much!

Do i have to put the codjumper info (like no fall damage, no rpg damage, being able to run fast after jumping etc.) into the server config, or is it enough to just have that in mod file?
Is there a default codjumper config i could use, with just changing the host name and map rotation and such?

I won't download any software, thank you!

Btw, the guide suggested i save the file in "C:\Program Files\COD4Server." and then copy to the desktop, but could i just take the folder i have now (which has many different mod and map details) and copy that one?

Thanks for the help!

You dont need a server.cfg or something.
Open Cod4. Choose your Mod. Goto "Start New Server" and set "Dedicated: Internet".

The Cod4-Console will appear solo:

Start Cod4 again and use console cmd "Showip" to show your IP:

Now you and your friends are able to connect using cmd "/connect yourIP" (no Port needed normally)
make sure to leave your first session open(the single console window as if you shut it down the server will close"
And everybody should have the same mod allready installed on clientside

Thanks, but i tried doing that already, and they still got "awaiting connection..." and then timed out.

EDIT: While i was in the server i could not see anybody trying to connect, so it seems like there's some information that isn't being sent at the beginning.

It's possibly a port forwarding issue, then.

When you've got your server hosted, try seeing if you can find it through Xfire or a site like GameTracker.

Okay, thank you both so much! I will try it out when my friends get home tonight. I'll post here what the result is :)
