Air Strafing?

Post by KoBron83 » April 3rd, 2010, 8:11 pm

So some dude told me about this thing called an air strafe. He said that if you continue turning in the air with an air sprint after your strafe jump you'll go farther. Is this true?

Because strafing in the air doesn't affect your flight. Granted acting as if you're finishing your strafe in the air can end up giving you a smoother strafejump while on the ground and thereby increase your distance...but that's not the same thing.

I think it does help. I made a speed checker awhile ago and as long as I was falling, there wasn't a limit to how fast I could get if I kept turning and holding a + w. You have to turn much slower than you do on the ground though.

Continually holding the sprint key won't help, but holding the strafe keys and turning slightly will help when in the air.

I had the research somewhere that proved a degree of roughly 38 (left or right) of the direction you are facing, is the fastest travelling angle, the research was in depth to the degree of stupid maths though :P

Are you saying that a 38 degree angle to where you are strafing will get you even further than a 90 degree angle?

Besides the air strafe, I've also heard that jumping right after uncrouching will increase your height a tiny amount. So if that's true, maybe you can bounce higher if you uncrouch right when you hit the bounce?

No...

Start at 90 degrees.
Turn 90 degrees then jump
continue turning 38 degrees.

Hold forward and strafe (let go of jump).

This was for "quake engine", and should apply to at least earlier game versions.

Its a very complicated idea, and the maths only really works well in fast games, i.e Quake and Wolf.

i persoanly can :P. After a bounce, if you strafe the oppisite way from the original way (sounds strange) you can change position and go a little further (it migth just be in the mind :D)

Think about this...

If you fall vertically down you CAN move forward and back while falling. Try it. :)

Interesting idea would be to attempt to change direction of you strafe after you jump.

So for example

- Stand at 90, jump to your right
- Right strafe, turn 90 and jump
- Continue turning but switch strafe key (As if you were srtafing into the landing)
